Landmarks in Ancient Dover, New Hampshire by Mary P. Thompson, Durham, N.H. ©1892, Printed by the Republican Press Association, Concord, N.H. LANDMARKS: Champernowne's Creek NAMES: HAINES, Samuel; DRAKE, Francis; HAYNES, Gudman; NEALE, Walter; PACKER, Thomas; PEIRCE, Col. J.W.; CHAMPERNOUNE, Capt; Champrenowne's Creek. Mentioned April 15, 1664, when Samuel Haines had 80 acres of his "divident land" laid out to him adjoining Francis Drake's, "neere Capt. Champernoune's creek," thence running west 72 rods to the cartway at the fence between "Gudman Haynes and Walter Neale." (Portsmouth Records.) This creek rises in the Great Swamp, flows through Greenland, and empties into the Great Bay east of Packer's Point, but the name is no longer in use. It is now called Packer's creek, from Thomas Packer who acquired part of the Champernowne lands, and sometimes Peirce's creek, from Col. J.W. Peirce, who bought part of the Packer estate.
