LANDMARKS: Coleman's Creek NAMES: DOWNING, John; SHACKFORD, Capt. Samuel; SHACKFORD, Jno; COLEMAN, Nathaniel P.; BEAN, RUEL J.; DREW, Nancy; COLEMAN, VALENTINE, M., Esq.; COLEMAN, James; Coleman's Creek. This name is now given to a small brook that empties into Trickey's cove, Newington. It is the "little gully" mentioned in a deed from John Downing to Saml and Jno Shackford, March 5, 1713. (See Trickey's Cove.) The present name is derived from Nathaniel P. Coleman, to whom Ruel J. Bean conveyed, May 11, 1846, a tract of land adjoining Pascataqua river, formerly owned by Capt. Saml Shackford, beginning at the creek on the easterly side of Bean's land, and running southerly by the river round by Zackey's Point, so called, to the centre of the creek against Nancy Drew's land, etc. This land now belongs to Valentine M. Coleman, Esq., son of the above Nathaniel. Coleman's cove, so called, in Newington," is mentioned in the N.H. Gazette (Portsmouth) of Oct. 20, 1801; apparently the small cove below Dumpling cove, where James Coleman owned land at the close of the last century. PG 50 Submitted by C.
