So called from John Downing, who acquired land in the Pitch-Pine plains of Newington Feb. 14, 1723-4 (See the Gore.) Richard Downing's land in the upper Pitch-Pine plains of Newington is mentioned in 1770. (See Pitch-Pine Plains.) and Feb. 27, 1799, Bartholomew Downing and Richard D.
