Landmarks in Ancient Dover, New Hampshire by Mary P. Thompson, Durham, N.H. ©1892, Printed by the Republican Press Association, Concord, N.H. LANDMARKS: Humphrey’s Pond NAMES: VARNEY, Humphrey; STARBUCK, Sarah; STARBUCK, Edward; Humphrey’s Pond. This name is given to Willand’s Pond in the Somersworth records of March 16, 1793; also in Merrill’s N.H. Gazeteer of 1817, and in Hayward’s New England Gazeteer of 1839. The origin of the name is uncertain, but it may have been derived from Humphrey Varney, who was received an inhabitant of Dover, Aug. 2, 1659, and married Sarah, daughter of Elder Edward Starbuck, who owned land around Cochecho pond, now Willand’s.
