Edward H. Smith Obituary - Died June 4, 1923 in Rochester, NH From: Darlene Walsh - Edward Hobart (Edwin Herbert) Smith was actually the son of John G. Smith and Lucy Anne Gilpatrick. Born 20 July 1850. Foster's Daily Democrat Tuesday June 5, 1923: "Death of E. H. Smith Edward H. Smith, aged 73 years, died at his home on Adams avenue, late yesterday, following a short illness. Last winter he suffered an attack of the grip and left him in a weakened condition and he has been gradually declining in health. Born in Hollis, Me., the son of John J. and Lucey Patrick Smith, he came to East Rochester thirty five years ago to reside, residing for quite a period in the double tenement house owned by the Eli Blaisdell estate on Highland street. For a number of years he sang in the Free Baptist church choir there also singing with other choirs and quartets while there. By occupation, he was a shoe cutter and up to his illness, he was employed in the N.B. Thayer Shoe factory in East Rochester. Many years ago he moved here to the city proper. He was a fine artist, many of his paintings having been exhibited in various places. He was associated with his son Chester H. Smith in an extensive poultry business and the have exhibited in the leading shows in New England. The deceased was a quiet industrious citizen, never had aught to say against any one. A wife two sons, Collins P. of South Portland and Chester H. of this city, also a daughter, Mrs. Jessie M. Carll of Dorchester, also two step sons, Emery H. Davis, secretary of the Norwich, Conn. Y.M.C.A. and Ralph Davis of New York city, lucratively employed with the United States Tire co. survive him. the funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev Edgar W. Churchill, pastor of the True Memorial church officiating." Foster's Daily Democrat Tuesday June 7, 1923: "Funeral of E.H. Smith Funeral services over the remains of Edwin H. Smith, who died Monday night, were held at his late home on Adams avenue yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, many relatives and friends being present. The services were conducted in a simple manner by Rev. Edgar W. Churchill, pastor of the True Memorial church. The burial was in Rochester cemetery, under the direction of Undertaker R. M.
