Saunderson pub l876 p.390 Stephen Hassam, son of Samuel Hassam and wife, Mary (Simpson) Hassam of Boston, b. abt l76l. His grandfather was Samuel Hassam and was in General Amherst's army for the invasion of Canada in l759. Stephen at l4 yrs of age witnessed the battle of Bunker Hill, from the steeple of the church at the north end. He said he carried water on the occasion to soldiers of the Copp's Hill battery. This family, during the war removed from Boston, to Grafton thence to Worcester, MA before coming to Charles town, NH. He had five children by this 2d marri- age, all b. at Charlestown, NH 6. John F. Hassam b. abt l843 private in Co. B, l4th Reg. NH Vol's did at Washington, D.C. July 3lst l863. 7. Flora J. Hassam b.l844 m. l866 Charles Burnham of Springfield, VT; d. there Feb 9, l868 buried at Charlestown, NH 8. Winfield Scott Hassam b. l847 9. Carrie Phebe Hassam b. l849 m. Eugene A. Randall of Springfield, VT in l868 Res: Charlestown, NH 10. Emily Hassam b. l85l d. l855. Stephen Hassam reached the age of nearly l00 when he d. on Feb 4, l86l. He was a noted clock-maker and clocks of his were still found in considerable numbers in l876. The Town Clock on the church of the South Parish, Charles town is his work. He also was a gifted sculptor - the Golden Eagle carved by him for years spread its wings over the porch of the principal hotel in Charlestown. He built the hotel and the house later owned by Ebenezer Tidd, Esq. standing on or near the spot where the Capt.
