Saunderson pub 1876 p.4ll Jonathan Holton the earliest settler of that name in Charlestown, NH was descended from William Holton who was born in England in 1611 and arrived in this country on the ship: The Francis from Ipswich, ENG in 1634. Willian Holton was one of the orig. proprietors of Hartford, CT thence removed to Northampton in l663 where he was a deacon of his church.  He rep'd Northampton for 5 yrs in the General Court and rep'd Hadley for one year viz., l669.  He settled in Northfield as is recorded thusly: "It was voted and agreed by the proprietors of North- field to give to each of our honored Committee: Mr. Wm. Clark, Deacon William Holton, Sergt. John King and Ens- ign Preserved Clapp, five acres of interval land in the Three Little Meadows, without paying any purchase money; and it is to lie clear of any town charges what- soever."   This land was not a present to them but was apportioned to them as an honorary testimonial of the value of their services, on conditions far more advant agious than were conceded to the proprietors in general. He died in Northfield Aug l2, l69l. William and Mary Holton (maiden name unascertained) had a family of seven children all born either at Hartford or Northampton, of whom Mary and Sarah Holton were both married the same day, viz., Nov l8, l656; the former to David Burt and the latter to John King, which were the lst two marriages solomnized in Northampton. The eldest child of William and Mary Holton was John Holton who died Apr 26, l7l2.  He m. Abigail_____who survived him but whose death we have no record.  John Holton and wife, Abigail had seven children, the youngest of whom, Thomas Holton is the line of descent of the Holton(s) of Charlestown, NH The death of Thomas Holton is described by Hon George Sheldon in his History of Northfield p. l95:  Aug. l3th while the men were scattered in their grain fields, Gray Lock (the Indian) with a party of four Indians way- laid and killed two of our leading citizens, viz., Thomas Holton aged 42 yrs and Gheophilus Merriman aged 3l yrs.  Taking their scalps the Indians pressed on to Rutland where the next day they attacked Deacon Joseph Stevens and four of his sons as they were making hay in the meadow. Thomas Holton was born Oct 23, l68l and m. Mindwell Allen dau of Samuel Allen of Northampton.  He d. and she m. (2) Daniel Chapin in l726  She d. Oct 2l, l758.  Thomas Holton and Mindwell Allen had five children of whom Joshua Holton b. abt l703 was the eldest.  Joshua Holton as his father before him was killed by Indians. (See Hist. of Northfield, pp 243 and 37l) Joshua Holton and his wife Mary had three children: Ebenezer Holton, Jonathan Holton and Joshua Holton, Jr. Jonathan Holton m. Hannah Olcott dau of Timothy Olcott of Bolton, CT bp. Apr l9, l747. Res: Chester, VT thence to Rockingham then in l786 to Charlestown, NH his perma- nent residence.  He was a soldier in the War of the Rev. He was at the battle of Bennington under Gen. Stark and was wounded there, and marched twice to the defense of Ticonderoga.  At Charlestown, NH he was a farmer and also Dep. Sheriff and Jail-keeper.
