Saunderson pub 1876 p.476 Capt. John Metcalf was desc. from Rev. Leonard Metcalf of Norwich, Norwich County, ENG Rector of Norwich Cathe- dral for many yrs prior to l6l6.  Michael Metcalf, his son thru whom this line is desc'd.  In l635 he became a dissenter and was forthwith accused of heresy. His two accusers died and he escaped conviction and was forced to fly from his country with his wife and children and go to New England, taking ship from London Sep l7, l636 but stormy seas forced the ship to Plymouth (in old ENG) They finally too ship and sailed Apr l5, l637 arriving at Boston, Mass. June l7, l637 with wife and nine child- ren and a servant.   Michael Metcalf (above) was b. at Norwich, Norfolk County, England in l585 and died in Dedham MA l664.  His wife, Sarah (surname unknown) to whom he was married Oct l6, l6l6 was born June l7, l593 died Nov 30, l644. Michael and Sarah Metcalf had eleven children, nine of which were born in Norwich, ENG and two in Dedham, MA after arriving in this country.  Michael Metcalf, Jr. the 3d child b. Aug 20, l620 m. Jan l4, l644 Mary Fair- banks and died in Dedham Mar 27, l654.  His wife who was the dau of John Fairbanks of Stafford, ENG d. at Dedham Feb l2,l673. By this marriage there were five children through the youngest, of whom, Eleazer, the line of decent is traced. Eleazer Metcalf was b. Mar 26, l652 and m. Meletiah Fisher Apr 9, l684 b. May l, l667.  He d. Aug ll,l742 and she d. Aug 20, l742.  They had ten children. Eben- ezer Metcalf their 4th child, b. Jan 8, l69l m. l73l Martha Rockwood dau of Benjamin Rockwood b.l700 at Rutland, MA.   He d. l75l and she in l787.  They had five children.  Samuel Metcalf their 3d child b. Apr 26, l739 m. l762 Hannah Richardson dau of Thomas Rich- ardson of Leicester, Ireland. where she was born Apr l0, l743.  He d.June l3,l785 and she d. at Corinth, Orange County, VT in l8l2.  They lived in Oakham, MA.  They had twelve children of whom John Metcalf was their 6th child and Betsy (or Elizabeth) Metcalf the 9th child. They settled at Charlestown, NH. p.477 John Metcalf was born at Oakham, MA He removed to Charl- estown, NH and was a farmer.  He m. Roby Converse, dau of John and Kezia (Nichols) Converse on Apr l4, l796. Their children were: 1.  Ralph Metcalf b. Nov 2l, l798 p.478 Hon. Ralph Metcalf labored with his father upon the farm until Aug. l8l8, when owing to lameness of his limbs saught a profession. He attended Chester VT Academy and entered l8l9 Dartmouth thru l82l and accepted a profess- orhsip in Capt Alden Partridge's Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Norwich, VT for one year and then returned and grad. Dartmouth l823.   In l825 he joined the office of the Hon. George Upham of Claremont, NH thru to l826, when admitted to the bar. He lst pract- ised at Newport, NH until l828 thence to the state of NY in copartnership with Judge Waterman of Binghamton, NY He returned to NH in l830 settling at Claremont and in l83l elected Sec. of State.  In l855 a political party styled "The Know Nothing or American Party" developed and Mr. Metcalf was candidate for Governor in l855 and elected. He d. Aug 26, l858. He m. Jan l, l835 Lucretia Ann Bingham, dau of Nathan Bingham, Esq. of Claremont, NH  She d. April l, l836 leaving an infant who d. the following August.  He m. (2) Nov l0, l843 Martha Ann Gilmore dau of Capt. John Gilmore of Newport NH b. May 28, l824.  Their children: 1.   Ralph Metcalf, Jr. b. Aug 8, l844 m. Aug 6, l868      Lillie Burdette of Erie, Penn. (no issue) 2.   Martha Jane Metcalf b. Sep 6, l845 d. l848 3.   Frances Elizabeth b. Aut l6, l847 m. Jan 22, l866      John J. McDermid, b. Nov 4,l836 Res: Chicago, ILL.      Their children: l. Aug 30,      l80l d. l874.  Their children: l.  Diantha Glidden Metcalf b. l825 d. l826         2.  Sophia Jane Metcalf b. l827 m. l85l George             Mason Gilmore of Charlestown b. l824. They             adopted Florence Ducy b. l859 and Georgia             Ducy b. l860. Res: Philadelphia.         4.  Julian (male) Metcalf b. l833 m.
