Saunderson p.576 William Swan, son of John and Ellen (Erskine) Swan of Arbroath Forborshire, Scotland, b. Apr 8, l838 m. Nov l6, l868 Barbara Houghan (dau of John and Elizabeth Houghan of Dumfreeshire, Scotland) b. Mar 4, l843.   Their children: 1.  Ellen Swan b. Feb l4, l870 2.  Elizabeth Swan b. Dec 8, l87l d. in infancy 3.  Adeline Swan b. Feb l2, l873 4.  Margaret Swan b. Mar 22, l875. Mr Swan came to America April l868 and to Charlestown, NH March l, l87l.  He received his educ. in Scotland, as a florist and ornamental gardener and was subsequently employed (before coming to this country) at Trinity Episcopal College, Glen Almond, Perthshire, Scotland, also at the City Nursery, Brechin Forfarshire, then employed two years by Lord Grey at Kinfauns Castle, Perthshire, Scotland.  also by Lord Londsborough in Yorkshire at Grimstone Park, et al. On coming to this country he was employed in l869 as head gardner by Matthew Vassar at his private home in Poughkeepsie.
