This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Judith Courter Ullman ==================================================================== From an article written by Marion Pagan, Record Staff Writer (I assume this is the Bergen Record, no date on copy) Hopper Family Burying Ground Located on the boundary between two Hopper Farms, the cemetery was shared by both families and their relatives for almost one hundred years. The earliest known burial was in 1804. There is a picture of a sign placed by the Bergen County Historical Society. Photographer Steve Auchard/The Record. The article states this cemetery was in "Small Lots" which was on the southeast border of the Ramapo Tract. It is on Spottswood Road near Delmar Avenue in Glen Rock, Bergen, NJ. The copy of cemetery records that I have is identified as from Bogert Collection. It states on top of page Hopper Cemetery, Saddle River Township, Glen Rock, NJ, Fair Lawn Road. The dates of birth were created using Family Origins software. My interest in the cemetery were the deaths of Aaron and Sarah "Sophia" Courter. Sarah or Sophia Ackerman was the sister of Dorcas Ackerman who married Henry P. Hopper and Elizabeth Ackerman who married Garret P. Hopper. I have created family group sheets for most of the people buried at these cemeteries. Since the information from the Fairlawn Rd. Cemetery is included with the information from Hopper Burial Grounds at Spottswood and Delmar I am making assumption that someone combined the lists of the two cemeteries. The following is from Maria Hopper email message dated 24 Nov 1998 concerning this cemetery or cemeteries. Bergen County Historic Site Markers New Edition with supplement p.13 "HOPPER FAMILY BURYING GROUND Spotswood Rd. near Delmar Avenues, Glen Rock "Located on the boundary between two Hopper farms, the cemetery was shared by both families and their relatives for almost one hundred years. The earliest know burial was in 1804." (text on historic marker) This cemetery was recorded on p. 54 of Ackerman and Goff's Thirty-Seven Cemeteries and called Hopper Cemetery just off Ackerman Ave., Glen Rock. (also Budke #10760-10798) Another Hopper Burial Ground located quite near there but in Fair Lawn (p.53 Ackerman and Goff as Hopper Burial Ground - Fairlawn- Small Lots Rd. Cemetery Inventory "Rebecca Yeomans, site archeologist for DOT (department of transportation) investigation in area, suggests existence of such cemetery [at Small Lots Rd., Fair Lawn Ave, near intersection with NJ -208; according to Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery six remains were reinterred there in a nontitled mass grave; site of Henry A. Hopper's house destroyed ca. 1991 to allow building of ramps for Rt. 208 [ Henry's first two wives were bur. in the Hopper Glen Rock Cem.] Maria Hopper added this information 24 Nov 1998. Your list is from the Bogert Collection which is in the BC Office of Culture and Historic Affairs. Yes I think you should add my notes, Fred may have combined both cemeteries A & G lists 43 names there and 6 in the Fair Lawn one. I see the Cem. Sites book lists: Budke as having 39 numbers of gs. (but he often omitted children who d.y.) 49 names on Bogert Collection "field inspeciton on 6-7-01 reveals only one marker standing rest are flat on ground 9 sandstone and 23 marble (that's 32!)
