John Shelley, Sr. (1828-1878) John Shelley, Sr. was born in Ireland around 1828. He married Mary Gormanly. Employed by McNeals & Archer's foundry, he had a stroke on Tuesday, October 8 while at work, according to the Burlington Gazette. He died on Friday, October 12, 1878, at age 50, according to the Mt. Holly Herald. Mary Gormanly Shelley (1834-1911) Mary Shelley was the daughter of Charles Gormanly and Mary Goodman. She was born in Ireland and lived much of her life in Burlington. She died on March 13, 1911, preceded in death by her husband, John Shelley, Sr. The couple had a son, John Shelley and a daughter, Annie Shelley (Hubbs). Most of the Shelley family lived on Earl Street in Burlington. Annie Shelley Hubbs (1864-1933) Annie Shelley Hubbs was the daughter of John and Mary Gormanly Shelley and the sister of John Shelley. She was born on October 18, 1864 and died on January 28, 1933. Annie married Neff Hubbs. They had a daughter, Rosaline, and two sons, Dallas and Joseph. (St. Paul's Cemetery records show she lived at 430 Earl St.) Rosaline Hubbs Carter (1896-1918) Rosaline Hubbs Carter, daughter of Neff and Annie Shelley Hubbs and granddaughter of John and Mary Gormanly Shelley was born on August 9, 1896 and died on October 15, 1918. She married Raymond Carter. Dallas Hubbs and Joseph Hubbs Dallas Hubbs, son of Neff and Annie Shelley Hubbs, died July 15, 1903 at the age of 10 months. Joseph Hubbs was born on May 19, 1905 and died on May 18, 1943. Joseph never married. John "Jack" Shelley (1849-1904) John Shelley was the son of John and Mary Gormanly Shelley, both of whom were born in Ireland, and the brother of Annie (Hubbs). A blacksmith by trade, he died on April 14, 1904 as the result of injuries sustained when a horse that he was shoeing knocked him into an anvil at the U.S. Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry. He married (Martha) Jenny Dale in October 1872 and had two sons, *Harry and **Walter. After Jenny's death, he married Ellen Brogan Geoghegan, on April 17, 1879. John and Ellen had five children: John, Frank, Anna, Charles and Nellie. * (Harry Shelley married Anna McGeary on February 3, 1897. They moved to Pennsylvania. Harry and Anna are buried in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Scottdale, PA.) **(Walter Shelley apparently died between 1911-1915. No more is known about him at this time. ) Ellen Brogan Geohagan Shelley (1847-1911) Ellen Brogan Shelley, daughter of John and Mary Brogan, was born in Ireland on March 4, 1847 and died on January 24, 1911 in Burlington. She married Patrick Geohagan (Geoghegan) on July 6, 1869. After his death, she married John Shelley, a widower, on April 17, 1879. Ellen and Patrick had two children: Mary (Conrey) and Margaret (O'Neill). Ellen and John had five children: John, Frank, Anna, Charles and Nellie. Ellen was the step-mother of Harry and Walter Shelley, who were born to John and Martha Jenny Dale Shelley. Nellie Shelley (1880-1884) Nellie Shelley, daughter of John and Ellen Brogan Shelley, died December 13, 1884. John S. Shelley (1882-1955) John S. Shelley, born on June 15, 1882 in Burlington, was the son of John and Ellen Brogan Shelley. A mechanic for Beau Knit Mills, he died on March 31, 1955. He was the brother of Anna, Frank, Charles and Nellie and half-brother of Harry and Walter. He never married. Francis Aloysius Shelley (1884-1945) Francis Shelley, born October 5, 1884 in Burlington, was the son of John and Ellen Brogan Shelley. He died February 27, 1945 in Tullytown. A blacksmith by trade, he was the brother of Anna, Charles, John and Nellie and the half-brother of Walter and Harry. He never married. Anna S. Shelley (1885-1964) Anna S. Shelley, born September 16, 1885 to John and Ellen Brogan Shelley, died on July 30, 1964 in Seaside Park. She lived in Burlington for most of her life, but was a resident of Delanco at the time of her death. Anna was the sister of Charles, John and Nellie and the half-sister of Walter and Harry. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. She never married. Charles A. Shelley (1889-1950) Charles Shelley, born on March 23, 1889 in New Jersey, was the son of John and Ellen Brogan Shelley. A toolmaker by trade, he died on June 6, 1950. He married Catherine C. Birkwire. He was the brother of Anna, Frank, John and Nellie and the half-brother of Walter and Harry. Charles and Catherine Birkwire Shelley had seven children: Catherine, Mary, Ellen (Martin), Ann (McKenna), Charles ( born March 21, 1920; moved to New Brunswick), James and Francis (moved to California). (Ann McKenna was living in Blairsville, GA in 2001.) Catherine Birkwire Shelley (1890-1977) Catherine Birkwire, wife of Charles Shelley, died on December 17, 1977 in Mt. Holly. The couple had seven children: Catherine, Mary, Ellen, Ann, Charles, Francis and James. Catherine, who died in Mt. Holly, was survived by her daughter Ann McKenna (Mt. Holly) and son Francis/Frank Shelley (Glendale, CA). James Shelley (1918-1919) James Shelley, son of Charles and Catherine Birkwire Shelley, was born on September 10, 1918 and died of pneumonia on May 17, 1919 at age 8 months. (Parents lived at 439 Earl St, according to St. Paul's Cemetery records.) Catherine C. Shelley (1917-1968) Catherine C. Shelley, the daughter of Charles and Catherine Birkwire Shelley, was born in 1917 and died on June 21, 1968. She was a bookkeeper for Crosby Jewelers in Mt. Holly and belonged to the AOH and several other organizations. She was the sister of Catherine, Mary, Ellen (Martin), Ann (McKenna), Charles, James and Frank/Francis Shelley. She never married. Mary Ann Shelley (1922-1968) Mary Shelley, born September 17, 1922, was the daughter of Charles and Catherine Birkwire Shelley. A graduate of the St. Francis School of Nursing, she was a registered nurse and worked at Burlington County Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly. Mary served as a Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp. during WWII, and later was a member of the Women's American Legion. She died on April 10, 1968. She was the sister of Catherine, Mary, Ann (McKenna), Ellen (Mrs. John Martin), Charles, James and Frank/Francis. She never married.
