The submittor has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ************************************************************************ WILL OF SARAH COATE 1839 Burlington, NJ In the name of God, Amen, I Sarah Coate of the township of New Hanover in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey being weak in body but of sound mind memory and understanding for which blessing I most devoutly thank my heavenly father Do make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form following that is to say First - It is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral charges and expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my decease. Second – I give and bequeath unto my four daughters, Lydia Ridgway, Sarah Haines, Eliza Ann Coate and Hanna S. Hurlings all my wearing apparil and silver to be equally divided among them share and share alike but in case of the death of either of my said daughters before my decease, then to be equally divided between the survivors. Third – I give and bequeath unto my daughter Eliza Ann Coate a bed and bedding and the high po bedstead and six chairs in the parlour-one looking glass and one of the likenesses and all my Liverpool ware. Fourth, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah L. Heulings one looking glass and one of the likenesses. Fifth - I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas H. Coate one good bed and bedding and also the Clock, Desk, Bookcase, and the looking glass in the parlour and the field bedstead. Sixth - I give and bequeath unto my two grandchildren Sarah Ann Haines and Agness Haines all the goods I now have in my possession which I purchased at the vendue of Samuel Haines which said good to be equally divided between them share and share alike. Seventh - I do order that all my estate both real and personal not herein before devised to be sold and the proceeds thereof be applied to pay my just debts as aforesaid in the first Item in this my last will and testament. Eighth – In case after the sales so made as before specified in the seventh Item of this my last will the proceeds shall be more than sufficient to pay my debts as aforesaid, the residue I do order to be equally divided between my three children Eliza Ann Coate, Hannah S. Heulings, and Thomas H. Coate. Ninth – In case the property so ordered to be sold as aforesaid should not be sufficient to pay my jus (sic) debts as aforesaid I then do order that each of the legatees nambed (sic) in this my last will and testament do pay out of their several demises as aforesaid each one in proportion to the value of the property so demised unto them by this my last will and testament the said money to be paid to my Executors as hereinafter named. Tenth – and lastly, I hereby appoint my son in law Thomas Haines and my trusty friend Thomas F. Budd Executors of this my last will and testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of August one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight. Signed sealed published and declared by the said Sarah Coate to be her last will and testament in the presence of us – Thomas Haines, Samuel Asay, Curlis Go? State of New Jersey, Burlington County SS Samuel Asay one of the witnesses to the foregoing will alledging (sic)himself to be conscientiously scrupulous of the taking an oath & being duly affirmed according to law did declare and say that he saw Sarah Coate the Testatrix therein named sign and seal the same and heard her publish pronounce and declare the foregoing instrument to be her last will and Testament and that at the doing thereof the said Testatrix was of sound and disposing mind and memory as far as this affirmant (sic) knows and as he verily believes and that Thomas Haines and Curlis Goldy the other subscribing evidences were present at the same time and signed their names as sitnesses to the said will together with this affirmant in the presence of the said Testatrix. Samuel Asay Affirmed & subscribed at Mount Holly County State aforesaid the 18th day of February A.D. 1839 before me C. M. Harker Surrogate. State of New Jersey Burlington County S.S. Thomas F. Budd one of the executors in the foregoing Testament named being duly sworn according to law doth depose and say that the foregoing instrument contains the true last will & testament of Sarah Coate the Testatrix therein named so far as he knows and as he verily believes that he will well and truly perform the same by paying first the debts of the said deceased and then the legacies in the said Testament specified so far as the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased can thereunto extend and that he will make and exhibit into the Prerogative office at Trenton a true and perfect inventory of all & singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased as far as have come to his knowledge or possession or to the possession of any other person or persons for his use and render a just & true account & when thereunto lawfully required. Thomas F. Budd Sworn and subscribed at Mount Holly County & State aforesaid the 18th day of February A.D. 1859 before me Chas. M. Harker – Surrogate I Charles M. Harker Surrogate of the county of Burlington do certify the annexed to be a true copy of the last will and testament of Sarah Coate late of the county of Burlington deceased and that Thomas F. Budd of the county of Burlington one of the Executors therein named proven the same before me and is duly authorized to take upon himself the administration of the Estate of the Testatrix (unreadable, perhaps agreeing) to the said will.
