Born Nancy Ann Barton on August 5, 1934 to Lewis Whitaker Barton and Sara Pennell Barton, her father nicknamed her “Buz” for her energetic presence – buzzing around like a bee. Nancy and her younger sister Sally grew up in what was then unincorporated Delaware Township, now Cherry Hill NJ, on her family’s peach and apple orchard on Kresson Road. The roots of Nancy’s lifelong passion for horticulture took root there. She worked every job on the farm, including driving tractors and trucks. Nancy and Sally were accomplished horsewomen who loved their prize-winning horses, Duchess and Hightone. Nancy was born and raised in the Quaker tradition. A lifelong member of Cropwell Monthly Meeting, she and her sister attended Haddonfield Friends School, then Westtown Friends School as her parents and grandparents had done. She was an excellent student and field hockey standout. She also met her future spouse, David Barclay, at Westtown School following in the tradition of her parents and grandparents before her. After graduating from Westtown in 1952, Nancy attended Wells College in Aurora, NY with Dave visiting every weekend from Princeton. In a devastating blow, her sister Sally was killed in a car accident in 1955 while Nancy was at Wells. Nancy and Dave graduated from college with degrees in psychology in 1956 and married at Cropwell Meeting in Marlton, NJ. They honeymooned at the Barclay family cabin in Estes Park, CO. Soon after, Dave enlisted as an officer in the Marine Corps. Nancy gave birth to two boys on military bases, David III in Quantico, VA and Andrew in La Jolla, CA. In 1960, after Dave’s discharge, the Barclays moved into the 250-year-old Springdale Farm farmhouse in Cherry Hill, NJ. Son Peter was born soon after, and Nancy’s parents moved to a new home on the same property. While Dave immersed himself in his father-in-law’s irrigation business, Nancy dedicated herself to the difficult task of raising three boys while juggling leadership roles in the Philadelphia Horse Show, the Philadelphia Flower Show, Cooper Hospital, the Council of Proprietors of West New Jersey, Medford Leas, the Barton Arboretum, Master Gardeners, and as an aerobics instructor. Nancy and family traveled extensively on skiing, hiking and beach vacations. For the past 13 years, Nancy lived at Medford Leas, a Quaker retirement community in Medford, NJ. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, David Moore Barclay II, on November 24, 2021. She is survived by her three children: David Moore Barclay III (Leila), Andrew Barton Barclay (Michelle), and Peter Lewis Barclay (Laura); eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
