West-Jersey Pioneer. (Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: March 01, 1856 December 1855
Advices from Hong Kong, dated the 16th of Dec., announce the death of Commodore Joel
Abbott commander of our E. India squadron. This officer entered the navy in June
1812, and received his commission as captain and commander in October, 1843. Out of
44 years that he was in the service he only passed 13 years at sea, 10 years and 9
months having been spent on shore and other duty, and 20 years and 6 months without
any employment.
