(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: April 21, 1860 April 21, 1860 The remains of Capt. Compton arrived in Philadelphia, from Cuba, last week, and were taken to Mauricetown for interment. He died at the former place some five months since. The body was embalmed, and placed in a splendid air-tight coffin of cast iron, with walnut finish, and brought to his afflicted widow and children at a cost of some three hundred dollars. Capt. C. was the son of Samuel Compton, Sen. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon last, and was attended by a large circle of friends, together with Ariel Lodge of Odd Fellows, and representatives from Tuckahoe, Winslow, and Cold Springs Lodges. A sermon was preached from the text “Be ye also ready” by Rev. S. H. Johnston, Grand Chaplain of the State. The corpse could be seen through a glass set in the coffin over the face.
