(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: March 13, 1858 March 1858 Horner, Asa Sons-Melancholy Accident. It becomes our painful duty to record one of the most sad and fatal accidents that has occurred in this County for a long time. We are informed that three sons of Mr. Asa Horner, residing in Stoe Creek Township, near Seeley’s Mill Pond, were drowned on Sunday afternoon last. It was supposed by the parents that the boys had gone over to their uncle’s, and would return in the morning, consequently they retired for the night without giving themselves any uneasiness. As they did not return in the morning, the father started over to see what had become of them, but was soon told by the little girl, who had been down to the pond, that there was a cap on the ice. When they arrived on the spot, the solemn reality that they were drowned, was evident. It appears that they had, in some way unknown, got into a hole about five feet square, which bad been cut in the ice some days previous, and there, perished. Their bodies were immediately recovered, as the water at the head of the pond, where they were drowned, was only about four feet deep, Their respective ages were eleven, thirteen, and fifteen years. This sad stroke falls heavily on the bereaved parents.
