(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: March 27, 1858 March 1858 We are again called upon to record another melancholy accident, which occurred here on last Saturday evening. Benjamin James, a colored man well known to the citizens of Bridgeton, went on board the steamer, Express at the upper wharf in this town, rode down in her to the lower wharf, with the intention of going ashore and going home. On account of the low tide, the boat could not approach the shore, but was obliged to anchor out in the stream. Mr. James ate his sapper on board the boat, and remained there part of the evening. It is supposed that some time during the night, perhaps 10 or 11 o’clock, as the boat neared the wharf, he got up and went to the deck, thinking he could jump ashore with safety, but the Fates had decreed otherwise. He made a misstep and fell, and no one knowing anything about the occurrence, he was drowned. His body was found on Sunday afternoon, and on Monday was interred in the Baptist burial ground in Bridgeton. Life how uncertain; in the midst of it we are in death.
