(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: October 08, 1859 October 8, 1859 HOMICIDE. Last Wednesday afternoon, as Mr. Jeremiah Perry was threshing out some wheat for Mr. R. B. Fithian, a well known character by the name of Jacob Lackey, while interfering with the machinery, was told by Mr. Perry to get out of the way, when he became vicious, and rushed at Mr. Perry with a pitch fork, asserting at the same time that he would kill him; whereupon Mr. Perry took a piece of scantling and struck him three times; the last blow on the temple, resulting in his death in about two hours after. Coroner Carter of Bridgeton, upon being notified of the fact, after summoning a jury, went out and held an inquest. The substance of the verdict rendered was, that the deceased came to his death by blows indicted by Jeremiah Perry, in self-defense. The deceased was an old offender, being the same one who attempted to burn the County House some time since.
