(Bridgeton, N. J.) 1851-1884: August 18, 1860 August 18, 1860 Several deaths by drowning have lately occurred at watering places in this State. At Atlantic City, on Wednesday of last week, Mr. T. J. Badger, of North Carolina, a medical student in one of the Colleges in Philadelphia, was swept cut to sea by the waves, and half an hour afterward his corpse washed up to the shore. On Saturday Dr. E. O. Dummer, of Jersey City and Mr. John Whitaker, of Trenton, went to the assistance of some ladies who had become alarmed at being suddenly drifted into deep water. The ladies were rescued, but the unfortunate gentlemen were carried out by the current and before assistance was received, they were both beyond recovery. Dr. Dummer was a single man of about thirty- one years of age. Mr. Whitaker was a well-known citizen of Trenton, with quite a large family. He was prominently connected with the new Methodist Church Enterprise in that city, and his death will be a loss in many respects. On Sunday morning Mr. G. A. Ratz and wife were bathing at the Highlands, when both were carried beyond their depth by the undertow. Mrs. R. was insensible when taken from the water, but by prompt action was resuscitated. Mr. Ratz was carried beyond reach and drowned. His body was subsequently washed ashore and recovered. At the same time a party of young men were bathing nearby, and one of them named Edward Gardiner, was drowned. Such a succession of disasters should be an effectual warning, and the utmost carefulness should be observed by all who would safely enjoy an experience of sea bathing.
