(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: December 03, 1859 Charles Downie departed this life Sept. 24th, 1859, at sea, on board the U. S. Frigate Congress, after seven weeks illness of dysentery, in the 27th year of his age. The following notice of his death, from Mr. C. Hubert, of the Congress, we publish at the request of the wife of the deceased: “It is my painful duty, in compliance with a promise made to your husband, to inform you, notwithstanding all the care and attention of his shipmates, and the skill of the doctors of the ship, your worthy husband departed this life on Saturday evening at eight o’clock. He bore his long and painful sickness with true Christian fortitude, and bade me say to you, that he was perfectly resigned to the will of God, and that as he never expected to see you again in this life, he hoped to meet you in Heaven, beyond this vale of tears. He died as he lived; a Christian in the full triumph of faith, and a perfect trust in the redemption that is by faith in the Son of God. May our last end be as happy as his was. We buried him at sea with all the respect due to his eminent virtues as a man and a christian..."
