(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: January 30, 1858 Died on Tuesday last, Mr. Joseph Long, residing near Centreville, was so severely injured, that he survived only about two hours after the sad occurrence. He was hauling corn stalks into the yard of the farm which he had lately taken. The wagon was passing thro’ the gate, the mules which were attached to it, became frightened, and ran with great speed, dashing Mr. L. against an apple tree, where he was crushed, in a horrible manner, by the force of the wagon coming against him. It is said that be was standing on the hounds of the wagon at the time, when a corn stalk struck one of the mules, which caused them to become unmanageable. Dr. J. S. Whitaker was called to his aid, but the extent of his injuries were too great for human skill to rescue the sufferer from an untimely end. His sufferings could only be alleviated for a short time, when death ensued. Mr. Long was about 36 years of age, and leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss.
