(Bridgeton, N.J.) 1851-1884: 1 December 1855 Died in Fairton, on the 25th of Nov., 1855, Mr. George Smith, in the 48th year of his age. The subject of this notice committed suicide, by hanging himself in his barn, on the morning of that day, an event which caused a thrill of anguish in many hearts. A death so distressing, inflicted by any one, is well calculated to excite consternation; but, when such a man as the deceased, the sensation is still greater. He was one of the most respectable citizens of that place, was a kind and tender husband, an affectionate father a sincere Christian, an active member of the Presbyterian church of the village and justly regarded as one of its pillars, for a long time a teacher in the Sabbath School and very seldom absent from his class; for such a person to take his life, is one of those mysterious events ordained by Infinite Wisdom, which we may not understand. There can be no doubt, that the act was done in a state of insanity; for, about two weeks previous, he had been unusually pensive, and at times his conversation was such as indicated a diseased mind. In the afternoon previous to the sad event, he complained of much pain in the head, which was considerably flushed, and his eyes were said to be somewhat glassy; they however, apprehending nothing serious, all retired to rest as usual, but in the early morning he was found as above described. A postmortem examination, we understand, fully disclosed a diseased brain, confirming our previous convictions, He leaves a widow and four children to mourn their sudden and irreparable loss. We commend them to Him who is the only source of consolation in this their deeply distressing bereavement. Look then, dear friends, to that blessed Saviour who was, as we believe, so precious to him whose loss you now feel so tenderly. R.
