Dr. Robert Melville Colborn was born on Nov. 3, 1857 in Ashley, PA, to John
Wesley Colborn and Mary Eve Keiser. He lived with his parents in Hanover
Township, Luzerne County, PA between 1860 and 1870.

At the age of 12 he entered the coal mines as a breaker boy. Later he became a
machinist and after that a painter.

Sometime around 1879 or 1880, he married Emma Day Kindea. They had four children
together: one whose name is unknown, Jessie Leah Colborn, Melvin Russell Colborn
and Eudora (or Elnora) Gertrude Colborn.

He was a painter from 1880 to 1900 (listed at 195 East Market Street), according
to censuses and city directories. He lived in several towns in Wilkes Barre in
Luzerne County, Pa.:  from 1882 to 1884, he lived on Hazleton Avenue; from 1884
to 1886, he lived at 360 South Main; from 1886 to 1890, he resided at 47 Grove
St.; in 1897, he lived on Sullivan Street, andfFrom 1899 to 1901, he lived on
Sanborn Street. He is also listed at 47 Dana Street in Wilkes Barre in 1889;
this could be a business address.

Dr. Colborn embarked on his new career in osteopathy in 1899 at the Atlantic
School of Osteopathy in Wilkes Barre, Pa. and moved to Newark, NJ in 1902, where
he practiced for 44 years.

Dr. Colborn opened his first office in Newark at 331 Belleville Avenue, now
Broadway. He was the first tenant of the National State Bank Building at 810
Broad Street when the building opened in 1912. He was a member of the State
Board of Medical Examiners for 18 years and was dean of New Jersey osteopaths
when he retired in January 1946. He was 89 and at his retirement proclaimed he
was the oldest osteopath in the country.

Dr. Colborn who was a familiar figure in Downtown Newark, and had lived with his
daughter, Dr. Jessie Colborn Gilbert, also an osteopath practioner at 116 Heller
Parkway from 1917 until he entered Marcus Ward Home in 1946. His wife, Emma Day
Kindea Colborn, died in 1935. He  died on January 30, 1947 in the Marcus Ward
Home, Maplewood, after an illness of some months. He was buried at Maple Hill
Cemetery in Ashley, Pa.
