Will of Hendrick Jacobusse Essex Co., New Jersey 3452-3452G, B.H. p. 382 Will written 25 May 1760 and proved 7 February 1763 [The following is a transcription of the will of Hendrick Jacobus(se), as best I could decipher. I have added commas to make more readable. Otherwise it is transcribed as it appears in the will book… Becky Falin] In the name of God Amen. This twenty fifth day of May in the year of our Lord anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and sixty. I, Hendrick Jacobusse at Peekmans River in the County of Essex in the Eastern Division of New Jersey, yeoman, being aged but of perfect mind and memory thank be to God, therefore, but calling to mind the mortality of my body and that it appointed unto man once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, first and principally I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I recommend to be buried in deceit Christian manner at the discretion of my executors to be named, and touching the worldly estate where with God hath blessed me in this life I give bequeath and dispossess of the same in the following manner imprimis, my will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be well and fully paid and discharged. Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Egje Jacobusse a Negro wench named Bet and during widowhood to remain in possession of my house in which I now dwell and in the enjoyment of the personal estate and to receive a comfortable support from all my sons. Item, I give and bequeath unto my oldest son John a horse over and above his equal share with the rest of my sons. Item, my will is that all my land be divided among my eight sons, John, Jacobus, Johanni, Adryaan, Peter, Hendrick, Dirrick and Gerret, in the following manner. That is to say my will is that my old settlement shall be equally divided among my six sons Jacobus, Gerret, Dirrick, Hendrick, Peter and Adryaan, Jacobus to have the old and first lot, Gerret the second, Dirrick the third, Hendrick the fourth, Peter the fifth, Adryaan the sixth lot, each with their respective dwellings and improvements and that John and Johannis each of them shall have an equal quantity of acres in the purchase land as the rest have in my old settlement and touching the remainder of my purchase right that shall be equally divided among all my eight sons aforesaid, share and share alike, and in case the purchase land should be disputed, law then all my sons to bear equal expenses at law for the defense of said land and if after a court of law the said land should be lost, then John and Johannis to have their equal share in the land of my old settlement with the rest of my sons or the value in money, and in all mines and mineral, my twelve children to have an equal right provided they are willing to bear equal expenses which if any refuse, he or she shall lose their right in said mines or mineral. Item, my will is that the Brewery with what belong to it shall remain to the use of all my children. And touching my moveable estate, my will that that Dirrick my son shall have a loom with what belongs to it. Jacobus and Gerret to have plow and horses as the rest of my sons have had, my daughter Aaltje to have her furniture as the rest of my daughters have had, and my son Hendrick to pay ten pounds unto my son Peter. Item, my will is that my eight sons aforesaid shall pay within eight years after my decease unto each of my daughters Jannitje, Helena, Frytje and Aaltje, thirdy pounds and that said daughters shall have the third part of my moveables, the rest to be equally divided among my eight sons aforesaid. Item, I do hereby nominate and do hereby revoke and my void all other will or wills by me heretofore made, holding firm this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto let my hand and seal this day and year above written. Signed, sealed, published, pronounced, and declared to be my last will and testament in the Presence of David Mariney John Carrel Gerret Gerretse Hendrick Jacobusse, his mark Be it remembered that on the seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty three, Garret Garretse and John Carroo, two of the witnesses to the written will, personally appeared before me, Ugal Ogdon, duly authorized to prove wills and qualify executor in the Eastern Division of New Jersey and they being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists of Almightly God did depose that they were present and saw Hendrick Jacobus, the Testator within named sign and seal the written instrument and heard him publish, pronounce and declare the same to be his last will and testament and that at the doing thereof the said testator was of sound mind and memory to the best of their knowledge and that at the same time David Mariney was present and signed as did they each sign his name as a witness in the testators prospect.
