ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL CHURCH HISTORY & CEMETERY, GLOUCESTER CO., NJ Copyright(c) 2002 by Sandy H. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm **************************************************************************** St. Thomas Episcopal Church Focer and Main Streets Glassboro,Gloucester Co., NJ St. Thomas is the earliest church erected in Glassboro. The first Church building built in 1791 was made of logs, was very plain with one large window. It was also used as a school house. Located on the old burial ground on North Main Street it lasted for 50 years. This church was the effort of several prominent citizens ,namely the Stangers, Lutzs ,and Whitneys who reportedly held services in their homes until the small cabin church came into being. In the early nineteenth century St. Thomas had rough sailing because The Episcopal Minister either went back to England or followed their congregations to Canada during the Revoluntinary war. In 1841 the parish was incorporated and the congregation decided to change the location of the building. A new church was erected at the present corner of Main and Focer Streets on land donated by Bathsheba T. Whitney. The corner stone was laid by Bishop George W. Doane on April 18,1846. Local sandstone ,the same as used in the Whitney Mansion at Rowan College was used in the construction. The cost of the new church was $6000. The chancel was added during the Civil War. Little else has changed. Note the buttressed Bell Tower and walls, and the warm interior with the serene atmosphere within. Pass through the typically English Lych Gate, enter the Tower doorway And with the large ring ,pull open the inner door. Upon stepping inside the beautiful Gothic style church, one feels and remembers that generations of faithful and devout members have received inspiration and strength within its walls.
