Miss Margaret Gibbs was commissioned Guardian, and has been very successful in leading the group of girls in the search of the highest ideals of right living. Historical Sketch As is often the case, the first religious meetings held in Thorofare were held in the school house,a one-room brick building standing where the fine stone structure now stands. About 1845 Benj. Smith,of Pennsgrove,a local preacher, preached occassionally, and held a revival meeting assisted by Jos Guest and Merrit Pierce. Sam’l Budd,of Merchantville, preached previous to 1853. In 1853 Joseph and Elizabeth Cox moved to Thorofare, organized and conducted a Sunday School with the assistance of Benj. Low ,C. Stetser and others. After a time the members became discouraged but Mr. and Mrs. Cox refused to discontinue. Their persistence was rewarded in a great revival in the winter of 1857-1858.. Great crowds attended and hundreds from all the surrounding towns were converted. Rev. Aaron Ballard, then pastor at Paulsboro, assisted in the revival and organized a church. The first Building was erected in 1858,most of the work being done by Joseph Cox and Benj. String. The building was of two stories, the lower being of stone. The basement was used for about ten years before the second story was finished. The entire cost of the building was $4,000. A great fair lasting a week was held from which $600 was made and used to complete and furnish the upper room. A number of men went to Cumberland County by boat and secured a load of oysters and terrapin for the suppers of the fair, and for which $1.00 per plate was charged. Among the first official members were Edw. Lodge,Wm Lodge Mark Low,Benj. Low,Richard Wilkins,Clayton Shuster,John Hewitt,Isaac Lodge Wm. D. Rambo and John Crim. In 1879 Thorofare Church was set off from Woodbury Circuit and made an independent parish. The first resident pastor was Isaac Cook, who received a salary of about $300 and house rent. For the first year the house next to the church was rented for a parsonage. The house now occupied by Harry Cloak and a house then owned by Thos. Wyne ,now owned by C.H. Budd were rented For parsonages. The parsonage was buildt in 1889 during the pastorate of N.W Wickward. The present fine church edifice was built in 1908,during the pastorage of J. Mercer Hunt, at a cost of $8000;the last payment of this amount was paid Oct 13,1914. The following is the pastoral record so far as can be ascertained: 1858 A.E. Ballard D.Duffield Enoch Green H.
