On the 14th inst. The sentence of the law was executed at Woodbury Gloucester county, on John Gooby, for the murder of George Tiller, likewise a coloured person. He met his fate with a cool and resolute fortitude, drank some warm coffee just before he left the prison, and agreeably to his request, walked from thence to the gallows -- ascended the scaffold – gave the sheriff some instructions concerning his property, bade several farewell, and upon the necessary arrangements being made, the stage, upon which he stood, was cast from under him at twenty minutes past twelve, and the hapless mortal was suspended between heaven and earth, an awful spectacle to a large concourse of spectators, of the fatal tendency of crime and the retributive reward of the unnatural and heinous act of murder, After hanging about twenty-seven minutes his body was taken down, and interred the same afternoon. We do not learn that this unfortunate African ever expressed any regret for the horrid deed he had committed, or even shed a tear over his untimely fate, until he arrived under the gallows, when his sensations seemed to have been somewhat awakened, the tears rolled down his languid cheeks; we know not their source, but we hope they proceeded from that of compunction. The Sheriff humanely wiped the tears from the prisoner’s face, and discharged his duty in a manner becoming the philanthropist in connexion with the officer of justice. It is upward of twenty years since a similar execution has occurred in this county, and we sincely (sic) hope that we may never have occasion to notice another.___ Am. Star.
