"The Godown family is noted in the New Jersey Archives as being of Hunterdon County.  A 
letter accompanying the Bible, from the State Dept. of Defense, states that records of the 
department show that a John Godown served as a private in Capt. Cornelius Hoppock's 
Company, Col. David Chambers' Third Regiment of Foot Associators, Hunterdon County 
Militia.  He saw active service from January 20 to 22, 1777, being in the battle of Van Nest's 
Mill on the 20th.  See NJA, Second Series, 1:275.
	The family records are contained in a Bible imprinted: "Philadelphia: Printed for Mathew 
Carey, No. 118 Market Street, by Joseph Charless.  October 20, 1801.  The orginal Bible is in the 
collection of the Hunterdon County Historical Society, Flemington, N.J.
	No. 3181 of the GSNJ Family Records Collection."
