State Archives Author: JOHN SCOTT HOFF Rev. Daniel Hoff: Genealogical Data Entry: Born: ~1746 in Rariton, Somerset Co., NJ of Dutch ancestry having been pushed out of the NY area by the newly- arriving English. He lived in what is now called Pittstown (then known as "Hoffs"), Hunterdon Co., NJ. In fact, during the 1700s, the surname Hoff prevailed in this area located on the border of Alexander and Franklin Townships. The "war violence" (likely the French & Indian Wars of the late 1750s) likely caused the family to move to Northern Virginia, locating in Prince William Co (near Manassas) VA, in about 1772-73. Enoch Hoff, the eldest son of the Rev. Daniel Hoff made a living chasing runaway slaves and selling them back to their owners for a bounty, and was known for this throughout the Cow Run area after the family moved there from Virginia via flatbotton boat down the Ohio River in 1805, after Ohio achieved statehood in 1802 and land became available for homesteading. He was initially married to LAURA TITUS in Hunterdon Co., NJ on 19 Sep 1769. They had 3 children before she died ~1773-5: 1. Amos Hoff; 2. Powell Hoff; 3. Cornelius Hoff. Following her death, he remarried a Susan (Sophia) Moffett (Moffitt) Hoff ~1771/2, and they had 6 children: 1. Enoch Hoff (1773); 2. Hannah Hoff (1774); 3. Jonathan/John H. Hoff (1775); 4. Susannah (Susan) Hoff Dye (1776); 5. William Hoff (1780); 6. James Hoff (11 Apr 1788). He died in ~1802 near Manassas, in Prince William Co., VA. His exact place of burial is unknown, but is suspected to be on the farm of MOORE HOFF, located some 2 miles SW of Manassas on the Eastern border of the present-day Manassas Regional Airport on the E. bank of Broad Run. 15 unmarked graves were found there in 1997 in an archaelogical "dig" perfomed by the Virginia Dept of Transportation. Three years following his 1802 death, his widow, SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF moved with all her children and extended DYE and Chamberlin and HILL families to Washington Co., OH Additional Comments: I'd welcome contact.
