This deed contains quite a lot of detail about the ownership history of the tract and its location, and also provides evidence that Henry Groff, son of Henry Groff and Mary Harly of Amwell Twp., was a resident of Frederick Co., MD in 1794. Hunterdon County Deeds: Henry Groff to Samuel Groff (1794) Hunterdon County Deeds, Book 19, page 180 Hunterdon County, New Jersey ********************************************************* Henry Groff to Samuel Groff This Indenture made this fifteenth day of may in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety four between Henry Groff of the County of Frederick and state of Maryland yeoman on the one part and Samuel Groff of the Township of Amwell County of Hunterdon and state of New Jersey yeoman on the other part Whereas Joseph Kirkbride late of falls Town Ship in Bucks County and state of Pennsylvania Gent Deceased in his life time and at the time of his Death amongst divers of other things by several good and lawful conveyances was seisned in his demeasn as of fee of and in two certain tracts or parcel of land situate in the Township of Amwell afore said containing and laid out for in the whole two Thousand five Hundred acres bounded on the north east by the south branch of Raritan river on the south easterly and southerly sides by the land late John Kays John Woolmans Thomas and William Stevensons on the west and north west sides with the land life Gosenor Danns Edward Rahhill and John Reading as by several Indentures of Lease and release for one Thousand two Hundred and fifty acres each one of which is made between John Budd Son and heir to Thomas Budd late of the city of Philadelphia on the one part and the said Joseph Kirkbride on the other part and dated the Twenty third and twenty fourth days of march Anno Domini one Thousand Seven Hundred and twelve the other is made between William Biddle of Mount Hope in the County of Burlington Son and heir to William Biddle late of the same place Deceased on the one part and the Said Joseph Kirkbride on the other part and dated the twenty third and twenty fourth days of march in the year one Thousand Seven hundred and twelve reference there unto being had may more plainly appear the lot or tract of land Purchased from John Budd was to him where Surveyed for the third Dividend of one fourth part of Apropriety by the above named Thomas Budd the father Purchased of Edward Billing and Trustees by Indentures of lease and release dated the first and second days of March one Thousand Six Hundred and twenty Six the other lot or Tracts of Land descended unto the said William Biddle As son and heir to his said father William Biddle who had the same ____ layd out and surveyed as part of his share or Proportion of Land belonging to the ___ dividend of one half part of a Propriety of Land By him Purchased from Edward Billing and Trustees by Indenture of lease and release dated the Twenty second and twenty third days of January anno domini one Thousand Six Hundred and twenty Six. And Whereas Mary Kirkbride widow of Joseph Kirkbride and John Kirkbride Sons and all of them Executors of the last will and Testament of Joseph Kirkbride and thereby impowered did grant sell release and confirm unto Thomas Atkinson party of these presents and to his heirs and assigns forever a tract of Land farm and Plantation containing two hundred and Sixty acres and a half were being part or parcel of the above mentioned two Thousand five hundred acres purchased by the said Joseph Kirkbride the elder in manner and form aforesaid as by their Indenture of Bargain and Sale under their hands and seals duly executed and Recorded in the Secretaries office at Burlington in Lib.66 fol. 32 dated the Second date of October One Thousand Seven Hundred and forty five reference thereunto being had may more fully appear Whereas the said Thomas Atkinson did grant Sell Release and confirm unto Daniel Griggs and his heirs one Hundred acres of the above mentioned two hundred and Sixty two acres and a half acre in the year 1748 the 20th of August which one Hundred acres the said Daniel Griggs left to his sons John Griggs Jackson Griggs and Samuel Griggs in this last will and Testament dated in the year 1757 August the 22th and duly proved and Registered 1759 Nov 14th as the law directs and whereas the said John Jackson and Samuel Griggs did by by an Indenture of lease and Release bearing date the first day of August one Thousand seven hundred and Sixty three convey and confirm unto henry Groff the aforesaid tract of one Hundred acres of Land reference there unto had may more fully appear and where as Samuel Groff and John Runkle Executors of the last will and Testament of the said Henry Groff Deceased did grant Sell and release and confirm unto Henry Groff son of the said Henry Groff deceased the aforesaid tract of Land containing one Hundred acres by an Indenture bearing date in the year 1791 Now this Indenture Witnesseth that the said Henry Groff for and in Consideration of the Sum of three Hundred and Seventy five Pounds in Current Gold and Silver coin to him in hand paid by the said Samuel Groff at or before the Sealing and delivery of these presents the Receipt whereof the said henry Groff doth hereby acknowledge and thereof and of every part and parcel thereof doth fully and free acquit exonorate release and discharge the said Samuel Groff his heirs Executors Administrators and every of them by these presents he the said Henry Groff hath granted Bargained Sold aliened released and Confirmed and by these presents doth fully and freely grant bargain sell alien release and confirm unto the said Samuel Groff his heirs and assigns forever all that certain tract or Parcel of Land and Plantation situate in the Township of Amwell afore said being bounded as followeth (viz) Beginning at a post standing on the North Side of the Road leading to Brunswick from thence west nearly as the Road Runs by Arthur Hains land Sixteen Chains and ten links to a post being a Corner to John Griggs land from thence North twenty Degrees east by said Griggs and Samuel Groffs land land sixty seven chains to a corner post thence by Peter ___ land (formerly Thomas Atkinson) South Seventy degrees east fifteen chains and fifty links to another corner thence still by the said ___ South Twenty degrees west Sixty two chains to the first mentioned Corner containing one Hundred acres being a part and parcel of the above two Hundred and Sixty two and a half acres by the said Thomas Atkinson purchased in Manner afore said and where of said Samuel Groff is in actual Possession together with all and singular the mines minerals woods underwoods timber trees ways waters water courses Swamps pastures feeding buildings fields fences improvements fowlings fishings huntings hawkings and all royalities stranchises powers profits commodities hereditaments and appurtenances what soever there unto belonging or appertaining and all the estate right title Interest use trust Possession reversions remainders rents Issues property claim and demand what soever of the said Henry Groff in law as well as equity of in to or out of the same or any part or parcel to have and to hold the said tract of land containing one Hundred acres as it is above situated and Bounded and all and singular the above granted and released premises and every part and parcel there of with their appurtenances there unto the said Samuel Groff his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said Samuel Groff and of his heirs and assigns for ever and he the said Henry Groff for him self his heirs Executors and Administrators doth covenant promise grant and agree with the said Samuel Groff his heirs and assigns by these presents in manner and form following (that is to say) that he the said Henry Groff now at the time of Executing these presents is and standeth lawfully and rightfully Seized of and in the the said tract of land ___ of all and singular the premises hereby Granted and Released and of every part and parcel thereof with their appurtenances without any ___ of revocation limitation to use or uses so to utter change charge defeat incumber or make void and now in him and author ___ to grant Bargain Sell and release and confirm the same and every part thereof with their appurtenances. ___ Samuel Groff his heirs and assigns forever according to the purport true intent and meaning of these presents and also Henry Groff. ___ the said tract or Parcel of land and Plantation Situate and bounded as is before Expressed and declared containing ___ the premises above mentioned ___ to be granted and released and every part and parcel there with their appurtenances. ___ Samuel Groff his heirs and assigns ___ and their peaceable and quiet Possession freely and clearly discharged titles ___ incumbrances what soever against the said Henry Groff and his heirs and assigns and against all manner of Persons whatsoever ___ at any time hereafter claim to have any estate title or Interest of in or with the same or any part or parcel thereof shall ___ & defend by these presents and further that he Henry groff and all lawfully claming by from or under him or his ___ or unto the above granted land and premises or any part of parcel thereof with their appurtenances shall and will ___ of these presents upon the reasonable request cost and charge of the said ___ or cause to be signed Sealed executed and acknowledged all such further ___ Shall be made for the farther better more full and absolute conveying ___ remembered that on this Seventeenth day of May 1794 Henry Groff Grantor Mentioned in the with Deed of Conveyance did Personally Appear be fore me the Subscriber one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Hunterdon in the State of new Jersey and did acknowledge that he signed sealed Executed & Delivered the within deed of conveyance as his Vollintary act and deed for the uses and purposes there in contained.
