April 23rd 1861, and was mustered into the United States service at Trenton, N.J. as a sergeant to serve three months in Company A, 3rd Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry under Captain Joseph A. Yard and Col. Wm. A. Napton. The regiment left the state for Annapolis, Md. May 3rd 1861, thence to Washington, D.C. and was encamped at Meridian Hill until May 24th 1861. Occupation of Arlington Heights May 24, 61. was assigned to 1st brigade, Runyon Reserve Division of General Mc Dowell's Army, was on duty on line of Alexandria and Loyden Railroad until July 16, 61. Advance on Manassas July 16 to 21, battle of bull Run (in reserve) July 21, 1961. Finally, Honorably Discharged July 31st, 1961 at Trenton, N.J. by reason of expiration of term of service. He was commissioned as Captain and Aide De Camp at Camp Vredenberg, Freehold, N.J. in 1862, was on staff of Brig.Gen. Chas.Haight served as mustering officer. Assisted in the muster of 28th and 29regiments NewJersey Vol.Infantry in September 1862. Re-entered the United States service July 13th 1863 for a term of three years or during the war as 2nd Lieutenant of company I, 2nd regiment New Jersey Vol. Cavalry, under Capt. Fredrick Von Klitzing and Col. Joseph Karge. The regiment was organized at Trenton, N.J. Moved to Washington D.C. October 5th 1863, was in camp near Alexandria, Va. until Nov. 9th, 1963, Moved to the west Nov. 9th, 1863 was attached to the cavalry corps of west Tennessee and Mississippi, assigned to garrison and scout duty at Paris, Tenn. Dec. 1863 to Jan. 1864. Moved to Union City, Tem. to Trenton and Memphis, Tem. Engaged at Aberdeen, Miss Feb. 19, 1864, Prairie Station Feb.20, West Point, Feb. 20, Okalono Feb. 21, 22, Ivy's farm Feb. 23, Tallahatchie River Feb. 23, Raliegh Miss., April 10. Transferred to Company B., 3rd Regiment New Jersey Vol. Cavalry and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant to date from Jan.12, 1864 at Memphis, Tenn. under the command of Capt. A.S.Cloak and Col. A.J. Morrison. The regiment was attached to the 3rd division of the cavalry corps - Army of the Potomac. He served on the staff of Col. Morrison in the Wilderness campaign May 3rd to June 1864. Engaged at Wilderness May 5-7, 1864, Germania Ford May 5th, Spottsylvania May 9-18, United States Ford May 19, North Anna May 23-27, on line of Pamunkie River May 26-28, Tolopotomy May 28-31, Mauchump's creek May 3 1, Ashland Station June 1, Cold Harbor June 1 To 12, Havertown, Salem Church and Hawes Shop June 2. Served on the staff of Gen. J.H. Wilson, commander of the 3rd cavalry division until Sept. 1. engaged at Hawe's shop June 3rd, Bethesda Church June 11, White Oak Swamp June 13, Smith's store June 15, Weldon R.R. June 20, Jerusalem Plank Rd. June 22-23, Milford Station June 27, before Petersburg June 25, Winchester Aug. 17, Summitt point Aug 21, Mddleway Aug. 21, near Kearnesville Aug. 25, He was injured by his horse falling, breaking both bones in his right forearm, was carrying dispatches atthe time, Sept. 1,1964. Received 30 days leave of absence, then returned to regiment and was commissioned Captain of Company K of the same regiment. Engaged at Bridgewater Oct 2, Tomsbrook Oct. 8-9, Cedar Creek Oct. 13, Cedar Creek battle Oct. 19, Newtown Nov. 12, Rides Hill Nov. 22, Lacey's Spring Dec. 21, Moorefield Feb. 22, 1865, Waynesboro March 2, New Ashland Mar. 15, Dinwiddie C.H. Mar. 30-3 1, Five Forks Apr. 1, was wounded here gunshot wound of right ankle. Remained with regiment, engaged in fall of Petersburg, April 2. Wounded here in right side of head, was in hospital at Petersburg, VA. Received a leave of absence, returned in 30 days to Alexandria, VA. and was promoted to Major August 4th, 1865. Honorably discharged Aug. 8, 1865 at Trenton, N.J. by general order and close of the war. -------------------------------- Past Commander of the J.W. Conover Post, GAR. No. 61 at Freehold, N.J. His father, Joseph A. Yard was Captain of company G. 10 U.S. Infantry. war with Mexico, and Captain of Company A, 3rd New Jersey Vol. Infantry in civil war.
