She was found very much beaten and bruised, lying partly in the fire place, with one hand in the fire, by one of the neighbors who called in to see her. She breathed by a short time after being taken up. Suspicion rests upon a black boy as the perpetrator of the horrid deed. He has, we understand, been committed for trial. --- Trenton Federalist ======================================================================= New Brunswick Times 30 April 1828 page 3; column 4 MARRIED On Wednesday the 9th of April, by the Rev. Dr. M'Auley, Mr. JAMES F. M'GOGY, formerly of this city, to Miss MARY SEIRTFORD of New York. DIED On Thursday last, Mr. JOHN MARTIN, in the 35th year of age. Mr. Martin has for several years past been engaged in the leather business, in Somerville, and by his uniform uprightness, industry, and suavity of manners, had secured to himself the esteem of all who knew him. His remains were taken to his native place (Metuchen, Piscataway township,) attended by his mourning relatives and friends. =================================================================== New Brunswick Times 18 February 1829 page 3; column 3 TO THE PUBLIC About 18 months ago, a man by the name of JAMES BATCHELDER, after having been in this place for about a year, married a young woman of respectability, by the name of ELIZA SUTPHEN. After an incidental absence, he return to New Brunswick, and took said woman with him. Some circumstances connected with his departure, gave rise to suspicions relative to the honesty of his intentions. Since that time, these suspicions have been confirmed, by a letter directed to the Post Master in New Brunswick, making inquiry after this man, stating that he has an amiable wife, and a lovely daughter about nine years old, who are now residing at Sanhorton Bridge, N.H. with her brother, Mr. EZRA T. HOLMES, the writer of said letter; who states that in consequence of having heard of his second marriage, they are rendered miserable in the extreme. The following description of this man, it is hoped, will lead to his detection, in his course of impiety: He formerly lived in the town of Lancaster, State of New Hampshire, in the County of Coos. He is of middlingsize -- light complexion -- dark hair -- rather thin -- of fresh countenance; and speaks very incoherently, in consequence of having a defect in the pallet. -- He is from 30 to 35 years of age, the inventor of a patent right for currying knives, and a tanner and currier by trade; but has, during his residence in this place, been employed in what is called the beam-hop? connected with that business. He was a Master Mason in the North Star Lodge, in Lancaster, N.H. The friends and relatives the above named lady young woman, who has been thus deceived by the said JAMES BATCHELDER, deem it a duty thus publicly to expose him, and endeavor to obtain information relative to her, being anxious to save her from inf---- by this in----- transaction; two families remotely situated from each other, have been caused to eat the bread of sorrow, and drink the water aff--tion. It is thought that the said JAMES BATCHELDER is at present in the neighbourhood of Philadelphia. Editors generally are solicited to publish the above. A hope is entertained that the friends of suffering innocence will be alive to a sense of duty, and endeavour to stop this man at once, in this unhallowed course of conduct. Any information relative to said female particularly, will be thankfully received by her afflicted friends and relatives. Information directed to the Office of "The Times", New Brunswick, or to JOHN SUTPHEN, or THOMAS GRUNSON, of the same place, will be gratefully acknowledged. =================================================================== New Brunswick Times 1 April 1829 page 3, column 1 MELANCHOLY On Wednesday of last week, as the Easton stage was descending the hill on the turnpike from the latter place leading into this city, the king bolt gave way -- which upset the stage -- by which event several passengers were considerably injured; and the driver Mr. Wm.
