When Richard Hartshorne the first, moved from Portland Point to the village of Middletown he built the old house which still stands on the north side of the street and which today is probably the oldest building extant in this country. Here he died in 1722, and in his will made mention of a "family burial plot of a half acre on the street, in the orchard east of the house where I now live."
