Slocum Family Burying Ground, Monmouth Co, NJ (I have taken the listing of the Slocum Family Burying Ground from the Book of the Dead which I found at the Asbury Park Public Library, and I have walked the area and made notes on each entry. The state of this burying ground is deplorable: there is litter all over it in the form of broken bottles and cans; broken tree branches, ivy, and weeds cover the graves to such an extent as to making a venture in there almost hazardous. In the listing below I have added a couple which were not mentioned in the Book of the Dead and added my own notes as to the condition of each headstone. Ruth Ryan, May 3, 1998) The Slocum Family Burying Ground, Long Branch. (Monmouth County, NJ) This burying ground is mentioned in the Guide to Long Branch by J. H. Schenck, published in New York City, 1868. It is now joined by a large cemetery, but is separated therefrom by an iron fence. ***Note: To my knowledge, this cemetery has been deeded over to the City of West Long Branch. The larger cemetery mentioned is actually probably just the section of graves directly in front of the Slocum Burying Ground running out to Broadway, which is not included in the plot map of Greenlawn Cemetery. Just who owns this larger cemetery is a mystery at this point. It is also in a deplorable state, being overgrown with weeds and containing many fallen monuments. Baxster. See Millen. Bills.
