From: New Jersey State Archives 185 West State Street, CN 307 Trenton, New Jersey, 08625-0307 Deed Book G, page 46 John Johnston to John Havens, 22 May 1699 Know all men by these presents that I John Johnston of heponer in the County of monmouth and province of East new Jersey for & in Consideration of the sum of twelve pounds money of the province by me received of John Havens of Manasquan & said County of monmouth & province aforesaid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge & myself Therewith well satisfied & Contented Have Aliened Granted bargained & sold and by these presents Do alien Grant Bargain & sell unto the said John Havens his Heirs & Assigns for Ever all that tract of Land at Manasquan Granted & assigned unto me the said John Johnston by patent bearing date the 20th day of this present May Beginning at a red oake on the East side of yt Called Judah Allen’s Swamp & running South East twenty one Chains on said Allen’s line to his Northwest Corner a black oak thence North West thirty Chains to a red oak marked on three sides thence North East thirty Chains to a white oak marked on two sides thence on a straight line to where it begann bounded South by the said Allens land & round the other sides by land unsurveyed together with all the appurtenances thereunto Belonging or any manner of ways appertaining and ---- my Estate Right title Interest Claim & demand whatsoever of me the said John Johnston of in or to the same or any part or parcel thereof as amply & fully to all Intents & purposes as the same was granted to me the said John Johnston as aforesaid To Have & to hold the said tract of land & premises with their & Every of them appurtenances unto him the said John Havens his Heirs & assigns for Ever to the only Use & behoof of him the said John Havens his Heirs & assigns for Ever yielding & paying therefor his proportion of the yearly Cheife or Quitrent as the same shall henceforth become due & payable from the proprietors of the said province unto the King his Heirs & Successors In witness whereof the said John Johnston have hereunto set my hand & seal this twentieth two day of May anno Domini One thousand six hundred ninety & nine years & the Eleventh year of the reign of William the third over England ---King. Signed Sealed & delivered in presence of Thomas Foreman, John Reid Sept the 28 Anno Dom. 1699 There appeared before me Thomas Warner one of his Majesty’s Justices Mr. John Johnston, & did acknowledge this within Instrument to be his act & deed Thomas Warner, Esq. NOTE: 12 Jun 1996. In the 9th line of the above deed the surveyor, or perhaps the recorder, writes “running South East twenty one Chains on said Allen’s line to his North West Corner.” This is logically impossible. Therefore, in plotting the tract on paper, I have “ run South West twenty one chains to Allen’s Northwest corner. Howard C. Kelley
