To the Honourable House of Representatives of the Colony of New Jersey in Assembly Met at ElizabethTown ~ We your Petioners of the County of Monmouth Humbly Showeth.. Thereof by an order from his excellency Jonathan Belcher Esqr Captain General and Commander in Chief in and over the province of New Jersey ~ We his Majestys Most Dutiful Subjects of the abovesaid County of Monmouth and by by virtue of an Act of General Assembly have been called upon for a number of men to go to the Assistance of New York Government to Repel the french and Indians from marching into said Government and wheres by said of Act of General Assembly there way allowed to Each Common Soldier one shilling and eight pence ~ Day to be received after their Return into the Government which we your Petitioners think not sufficient for the support and maintenance in travelling and as many are Poor and not able to provide themselves with Army and ammunition, the Officers of Our Government Have been put to considerable difficulty in providing army for said Men and Ordered Distress made out of our County to the value of thirty or forty Muskets which we Your Petitioners would pray your Honourable House to take into your Considerations and order sattisfaction made in such manner as you shall think proper. We your Petitioners have been called upon a second time by an Order from the Governor and Council for a far greater number to be in Readiness to March into the abovesaid Government of New York, which if taken, from us as we are fronteerse to the --- Leaves us in a Defencless Condition Equall to Kings County in York Government where by Information there is not a Man taken. We your Petitioners would Humbly pray your Honourable house to Provide five Hundred Muskets, Swords or bagonets. Cartouch boxes or powder Horns also a sufficient Quantity of Powder Lead and flints for the life of Our County and further pray if any number of Men belonging to our County Should Joyn any Independent Companies, we think proper they should Receive the same Incouragements as Others.
