But Stephen must have changed it to "ch" because of what Mr. Chichester said about it in his letter. Also I know Henrietta used Chichester. In fact, our family traditionally pronounced it "Chi (with a long i) chester". When I told my dad that was wrong, he got quite upset with me. He married (1) SARAH E. ROBINSON 1839. She was born August 04, 1817 in Smithfield, RI, and died 1841 in Brooklyn, King Co., NY. He married (2) SECOND WIFE 1846. Notes for WILLIAM FOSTER CHICHESTER: The following three letters are abstracted from the original letters which are in our files. They were written by Jim Hinchman Chichester giving details of the Stephen Chichester family and the Joseph Hinchman family. They are used as proof, along with many census reports, of the structure and Chichester name of this family. As the father of Stephen Chichester was Phineas Chidester, (proven from his own bible records), it appears that Stephen changed his surname back to the original Chichester. His grandfather changed the original Chichester family name to Chidester. Over the years many verifyable name changes have taken place all through the Chichester families that came to America and descended from James Chichester, the immigrant of 1643. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Sept. 15th 1934 - - - - - - "I shall give here the bare outline of my ancestral background: Joseph Hinchman married Anna Griffing --- Their children; Mary, Joseph, James, William, John, Nathaniel. James Hinchman married Diademia Reading --- Their children: Mary, Susan, Nancy, Phebe, John Reading. Susan Hinchman married Stephen Chichester (m. Feb. 1809); --- Their children; William Foster, Alexander Hamilton, Diademia, Francis Hinchman, and others who died in infancy. Nancy Hinchman married Stephen Hurd (of Sparta, N.J.) --- Their children; Theodore, Dan Joseph, Phebe, Susan Caroline, and other who died before maturity. William F. Chichester married Susan Caroline Hurd (his cousin) --- Their children; Horace Greeley, Wm. Herbert, Lucie Caroline, Horace G. married (I) Etta M. Smith married (II) Hariet M. Royer --- Their children; William Albert, Horace Herbert, Marguerite Royer, John Samuel, Jim Hinchman. After the death of Stephen Hurd, Nancy Hinchman Hurd married Lewis Sherman. They had six children of whom survived childhood, Lesbia and Edgar. Lesbia was named for her mother's cousin, Lesbia Hinchman (m. Wm. Platt, who was a sister of Guy Maxwell Hinchman, long a resident of Dover and grandfather of Mr. Guido Hinchman. Stephen Chichester is as far back as I can get with this branch. He and my great grandmother were divorced and such a scandalous proceeding in the Victorian days apparently withered all interest in that branch. My father and his sister preserved a vast fund of information regarding Hurds and Hinchmans but were able to recall little of the other branch. Some years ago, I noticed the name Chidester in Sparta, but was told that this family could be no connection of ours. My father always held that Chidesters and Chitesters had had their names corrupted by trying to preserve in America the short i of the English pronunciation of the name. "The name", so I was told, "is Chichester amd nothing else as far as we are concerned". I was interested in one of your notes which mentioned James Hinchman John R. Hinchman (his son) and Stephen Chidister in connection with the sale of some land. The date was not given, but these men are surely my ancestors. Most of the other brief notes you have given, I have seen in the books you mention as sources. I have also found mentioned of early Chichesters in Stamford, Connecticut. Neither my father or my aunt ever recalled relatives of their father on the Chichester side. Last summer, when I visited my father, he said that he had a vague idea that his grandfather had come from upper New York state, but could tell no details. He said that such matters had never concerned him when the people who knew were alive. I am considerably removed in time from these ancestors, being the youngest child of my father's second marriage. Here is some dates which, oddly enough, fits into the material which you listed. Benjamin Pitney married Abigail Byram. Their son, Byram Pitneyborn at Mendham N.J. married Mary Armstrong (Sparta, N.J.) Their daughter, Jane Armstrong Pitney, married Isaac Hurd (brother of Stephen Hurd) Byram Hurd, the son of Isaac Hurd, was killed with my great uncle, Edgar Sherman, at the Battle of Egypt Station pn Mississippi, during the Civil War. Mary Elizabeth Hurd (Mrs. James T. Reynolds), a daughter of Jane and Isaac Hurd, lives in Newark and last April celebrated her 101st anniversary. I have met this interesting old lady and have conversed wiyh her about our connections, but as she says herself, her memory really only goed back about half acentury, which is not strange for one who has lived so very long.- - - " Very sincerely yours, J. H. Chichester 121 Bank Street, New York, N. Y. Newspaper clippings attached to letter. Horace Greeley Chichester formerly of Brooklyn, died Thursday in Eau Clair, Wis. according to word recieved here yesterday. He was eighty four years old the son of the late William F. and Caroline Chichester. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- November 23, 1969 -- - - "Unfortunately, my earlier interest in genealogy was handicapped, on the Chichester side, by the fact I was the youngest of my father's children, born late in life, and also the reason that my great-grandparents (Stephen and Susan Caroline) were "separated", if not divorced -- a subject surrounded by great taciturnity! My great-grandmother thenceforth made her home with my grandfather (William) and my great-grandfather went to live with his daughter (Diademia Chichester Beecher) in Galva, Illinois where he died in 1860. One item in your letter struck my attention: when, as a young boy, I pressed my father to recall anything of his grandfather (Stephen), he said that the word "Canadaigua" came to mind. Inasmuch as the town you cited was Onandaga, I wonder if this was the name he was reaching for, and that he imperfectly remembered hearing of family connections in that place. In a history of Sussex County, New Jersey, I once found mention of the fact that Stephen Chichester and his father-in-law James Himchman were in the iron mining business near Lake Hopatcong, but that is the only published reference I found of his name. I have a miniature of Stephen as a young man and a Daguerreotype likeness taken in his old age. Stephen and Susan Caroline Chichester had three sons who grew tp manhood and produced families: my grandfather William, his brothers Francis Hinchman Chichester and Alexander Hamilton Chichester. The latter (eldest), my father told mee, had nine sons by two wives. Several of these sons were killed in the Civil War, but the others must have spread the name to some extent, My father spoke of one or two who "went out west". If I uncover the Chichester material sent to me so long ago, I will be happy to forward it to you. As you will realize when you consult the forms, returned herewith, I am something of an anachronosm and not "genealogically" interesting, since I am married and have no children. Natyrally, however, I will be very happy to recieve any data you may find that pertains to my branch of the Chichesters. The younger generation, nieces and nephews and other off-spring, are continually applying to me for information on their progenitors". Good luck to your enterprise! Sincerely yours, J. H. Chichester (signed) 256 west 4th Street, New York, N. Y. 10014. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 6, 1970 - - - - "Sarah E. Robinson, the first wife of William Foster Chichester was born in Smithfield, Rhode Island, August 4, 1817. She was buried, June 29, 1841, "in the Friends' Grounds (Brooklyn, N. Y.) in the 24th year of her age." Samuel Alpheus Chichester, her son and only child, was born in Brooklyn, October 15, 1840. Died March 25, 1842, "interred inthe same grave with his mother." (These two items in accordance with entries in a family bible). You may not wish to pursue the history of Henrietta Chichester (Havens) (bon Jan. 22, 1831) out of regard for the feeings of her descendants, She was the natural daughter of my father's aunt Diademai Chichester. The story told to me was that when some disagreeable proposition was offered by the family of the young man in the case, the Chichesters re fused to allow her to marry him. She was hidden away, and her mother pretended to bear the infant. My father did not know until he was a mature man that the woman he believed to be a young aubt was in reality his cousin. He resented having this well-kept secret revealed by one of the Havens family. Diademia Chichester, my father's aunt, eventually married Merritt Beecher. They had no children. "Mr. Beecher", as he was called in the family, was either unaware of his wife's teen-age mis- step, or chose to ignore it. If my memory is accurate, Henrietta had only one child: Henry Havens. The only child of his that I ever heard of was Ada, and she married a man named Hilton by whom she had a child, though my impression is that the child died young. All of this is of course before my time, and is merely hearsay. Oddly enough, I recently ran across an old letter of my father's to his brother-in-law (McCotter) in which he mentions meeting Henry Havens unexpectedly in a Chicago railway station (January, 1892). I have previously listed for you the only children of my grandparents, Wiliam Foster Chichester and (Susan) Caroline Hurd Chichester. The Edwin and Charles you seek were possibly the sons of Alexander Hamilton Chichester, my grandfather's brother. Here is the information on these people as far as I am able to give it, without reference to stored material: Alexander Hamilton Chichester (born Dec. 16, 1809) married Jane Ann Van Wort (Feb. 8, 1809); Their children, Charles Henry, Frederick, Edwin, Ida. Married (2nd) ? date: ? : Their children, Whitfield, Sanford, Merritt, Stephen, Frank, Louis. Several of thes sons were in the Civil War, and I believe two of them (possibly another) were killed in that conflict. In the 1930's I met a lady in Peabody, Massachusetts, who was the widow of the above Merritt Chichester. He had served in the War. The lady was well into her nineties and could recall little family history. The Nancy Louise Chichester you mention was a sister of my grandfather's who died as a child. The Stephen and Susan Chidester you have recorded as divorced "in 1825" are unlikely to be my great-grandparents. The date is too early for their separation, for one thing, and the spelling was never used by my great- grandfather. I have seen his signeture and his name on many documents and the spelling is always Chichester. Furthur, he did not marry again after he and his wife parted. It is interesting to me that apparently the Byrams and the Pitneys were related to the Hurds. There are Hurds in my genealogy with these surnames as first names. I will procure the dates of my brother Horace's descendants and supply them. Sincerely yours, J. H.
