Brown buwbrown@comcast.net August 25, 2008, 10:18 am Dear Nephew. I received your letter which informed that Mr. Hamilton was not likely to be able to pay for the meadow he agreed to pay for this spring and by your account it appears doubtful whether he will be able to pay any other spring - but if he can give security such as you would like to take in like circumstances payable the first of next April I wish him to have it. If not I wish you to take charge of it and either occupy it yourself or put it out the best way you can. If you are a mind to buy it you may have your own time to pay for it. If not make the best of it and take pay for your trouble. I am so busy in preparing to move I have little time to spare to write to anybody. Jonathan has been sick and unable to do anything for two weeks which has put us back so that we shant be able to get away as soon as we intended but I hope we shall be able to move by the tenth of May if we all keep well. Elizabeth is very feeble and thinks she is hardly able to stand so long a journey but we shall fix her as comfortable as she can be. Jonathan Sutton has got so he is able to work in the tan yard and can see some with his sore eyes. I shall take this to Patty and perhaps she can find time to write to you. Give my love to sister Polly and tell her I thank her for her letter and I feel quite happy to find she is so comfortable in estate body and mind - give my love to Nancy. Tell her SL ___ (illegible word) Dr. Freeman has found a home so near where we expect to go that we may meet again once more in this world. I wish to be remembered to all my relatives as opportunity presents. Tell sister Polly if I live to get settled in the west I will endever to write. Our family wishes to be remembered to you all. I wish you all to keep in mind that you are born to die and go to judgment and that life is the time to prepare for that trying hour. From your affectionate Uncle, Jesse Upson. Mendham 16th of April 1838. Mr. Ashbel Upson Dear Mother. Uncle has been so kind as to leave room for me to write and I imbrace the opportunity with pleasure: we have often written together to our dear friends but I suppose this will be the last opportunity as he is soon expecting to leave this part of the world and journey to the far West. I feel as if it would be a great undertaking for him and for Elizabeth altho he is in good health but Elizabeths health is very poor. She has had the dispepsia so long and she is so Nervous that she is not able to do any work neither does she sit up all day. She says she dont think she can stand the journey. But her father thinks it will do her good and we all hope for the best. And now Dear Mother let me tell you how glad we all was to receive a few lines from you and to hear you was so well. I often think of you and would be glad to come and see you but cant tell when that will be. When we get to talking about our friend at Camden One says I mean to go Next Summer and the other I meant to go and we should all like to visit you very much. But we should be glad to receive a visit from our friends. Tell Ashbel I am glad he has not forgotten that he has a Sister Martha, although he never writes to me. I understand he has named his little girl for me and I should like to see her very much. You must kiss her for me. I think I shall make her a present when I have an opportunity to send one. Jonathan says I must tell you he has not forgotten you. His health is better than when I wrote last. He is at work but he cannot see out of that eye that was so bad at all. It is healed over and left a large white spot on the right and below it. He appears to feel thankful that his other eye is so good and prizes it higher than ever he did before. Give our love to all our Connection and except this from your unworthy Daughter Martha Sutton. Mrs. Mary Hungerford Martha and Mary send their love to all friends and Jesse his likewise. They are home with us. Erastus and Aaron are at work in this place. They are home every Sabbath. If Money was not so hard to be found I warrent they would visit you this Summer. Tell Erastus and Lent I think they might pick up some of them (illegible word) dollars and come with their wifes to New Jersey. It would be a pleasant ride and Ashbel also. Cousin Jonathan was married in March to Miss Elizabeth Phebe Dayton his Cousin. (Addressed to Mr. Ashbel Upson, Camden, Oneida County, State of New York. Also written on the cover of the letter: Miss Jane Nesbet, Waterloo, Seneca Co., N.Y.) Additional Comments: (Ed. note: I retained the exact language and spelling of the original, but I did insert periods, which Mr. Upson never used, in obvious places.)
