He had been ill with heart trouble for about five weeks. Mr. Toothe was born in England in 1831, and after a limited public school education was placed with his father in the metal and electro plate trade. He left it after a year or two and entered the offices of James Denham Barney, and American merchant. On becoming of age, he came to Brooklyn and took a clerkship for about a year. He then went to Chicago and entered the real estate business. In 1855 he did his first public writing, and attracted some attention by his exposition of the government frauds in Iowa. Soon afterward he entered the newspaper business. He filled many important positions on "The Chicago Times." When that paper was sold to Mr. McCormick, Mr. Toothe came to New York and re-entered business life by taking charge of the sale of railway material for Krupp. Since 1861 he had been identified with many railroad projects. He was president of the Consolidated Brake Shoe Company for many years and later vice- president of the Nathan Manufacturing Company. He was a member of the Library Club, the Colonial Club, Lawyers' Club, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Botanical Garden, New York Zoological Society and Juniata Club of Altoona, Penn. Those surviving him are his widow, one son, Edward S. Toothe, Western manager of the Nathan Manufacturing Company, and two daughters, Mrs. Jennie W. Huges and Mrs. Walter D. Co. His home was in Madison, N. J., but he spent his winters at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. Additional Comments: Wayne County Herald (Honesdale, PA) Thu Dec 8, 1870 pg 3 ...Mr. Wm. Toothe, of New York, and Miss Emma Schlager, daughter of Charles Schlager, formerly of this place, were married at the Presbyterian church, in Scranton, on Thursday evening last. The reception, at the house of Mr. Schlager, was a grand affair. The refresh- ments were provided by John Koch & Bros., of the Central Park Gardens, New York. The Scranton Republican Fri Dec 2, 1870 The Toothe-Schlager Wedding A social event much talked of for weeks past, and anticipated with great pleasure, was celebrated last evening in a genuine spirit of hospitality and enjoyment at the handsome and commodious residence of Mr. Charles Schlager on Washington avenue. The reception in honor of the marriage of the gifted and accomplished Miss Emma Schlager to Mr. William Tooth of New York city was one of the most distingue and pleasurable occasions of the kind which ever transpired in this city. The ceremony took place in the First Presbyterian Church at eight o'clock. The ediface was filled to its utmost capacity at a seasonable hour, and the the entrance of the bridal party greeted with the sweet melody of Diller's band. Rev. Mr. Logan performed the sacred rites; the bride was supported by Misses Vic Amsden and Louisa Schlager, and the groom by Messrs. Richard Pancoast, of Philadelphia, and George A. Townley of New York. Ushes were in attendance to receive and seat invited guests, and a brilliant assemblage present to witness the scene. The reception followed at the mansion of the bride's parents, and was attended by the elite and fashion of the city. For a couple of hours the guests continued to arrive until the large parlors, halls and other portions of the dwelling were filled to overflowing. The gay scene was enlivened by appropriate music from Diller's orchestra, and all went merry and joyfully. The refreshments were provided by Messrs John Koch & Brothers, of the Central Park Gardens, New York, superintended in person by Mr. John Koch, who was present at the party. The table was artistically and elaborately spread and laden with all the delicacies and luxuries of the season. Large pyramids of flowers adorned either end composed of china boquets for presentation to the ladies by the gentlemen, while in the centre was an imposing fruit pyramid which attracted general attention. Boned turkey, chicken and lobster salads, spiced oysters, elegant fruited jellies, cakes of all kinds, ice creams and ices of various flavors, coffee, tea, chocolate, lemonade, etc., etc., innumerable, comprised the various tempting dishes, all of which were served in the best of style. The many friends of Mr. John Koch present extended to him the most cordial of welcomes back to Scranton, even for a day. As a caterer, Mr. Koch has no superior and few equals, and his quandam patrons rejoicd in his marked success last evening. The gentlemen's withdrawing room was bounteously supplied with cigars of the choicest brands, and costly port and sherry wines and liquors, and champagnes unlimited of Mr. Koch's own importation--Verzenay of an extra qualilty. Then goodly stories were enjoyed in a moderate and rational way by most of the sterner sex and many toasts were appropriately observed to the honor of Mr. Schlager's broad guage hospitality. At twelve o'clock the guests bade adieu to the happy pair and their kind host and hostess, save a few of the younger representatives who accepted a cordial invitation to prolong the festivities by indulging in a dance. A circle of gentlemen friends of Mr. Toothe were present from New York and Philadelphia, and jovial good fellows all of them were, too. We hope their first glimpse of Scranton society made a favorable impression upon them, and little doubt that it did. Among the guests from abroad we also noticed Mr. Sherman D. Phelps, of Binghampton, Mr. D. G. Driesback, of Beach Haven, Mrs. Wilson, of Plymouth, Miss Murray, of Milwaukee, and many others. The bridal party start upon their tour this morning, and carry with them the kind wishes of a host of friends. Naught save pleasant memories linger about last evening. May the future of the wedded couple be happy and prosperous. 1900 Madison, Morris, New Jersey William Loothe 68 Head Nov 1831 Eng Eng Eng [Toothe] Emma Loothe 52 Wife Feb 1848 PA Germany Germany Clara Mc Guire 22 Daughter Oct 1878 NJ Eng PA Joseph Mc Guire 22 Son in Law Mar 1878 Thomas Corr 35 Servant Edward V Rosanbin 7 Grand Son Oct 1892 NJ NJ NJ John J Rosanbin 6 Grand Son Jan 1894 NJ NJ NJ Mary Irving Servant 63 1900 New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut Walter E Coe 29 Head Carlotta Coe 25 Wife Anne Muiwagh 19 Servant 1900 New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut Nisbet Grammar 18 Head Theodore L Montague 22 Partner Student Yale George L Carlisle 22 Partner Student Yale Ernest Brooks 20 Partner Student Yale Harry V Gifford 22 Partner Student Yale Ralph R Lee 20 Partner Student Yale George W Maybee 22 Partner Student Yale Edward W Hunt 20 Partner Student Yale William H White 23 Partner Student Yale Edward S Toottie 19 Partner Sep 1880 NJ ENG PA Student Yale [Toothe] * Carlton H Woodruff 23 Partner Student Yale William N Connor 20 Partner Student Yale New York, New York, U.S., Marriage License Indexes, 1907-2018 Name: Jennie W Hughes Gender: Female Marriage License Date: 1 Nov 1923 Marriage License Place: Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA Spouse: Thomas B Littlejohn License Number: 18429 New York, New York, U.S., Extracted Marriage Index, 1866-1937 Name: Jennie W Toothe Gender: Female Marriage Date: 26 Dec 1882 Marriage Place: Kings, New York, USA Spouse: Oliver I D Hughes 1880 Linden, Union, New Jersey William Toothe 49 Head England Emma S.
