(Most from the 1854 Powhattan Shipwreck) This cemetery is quite old & many stones are defaced, weather worn, aged and broken. Some stones had to be rubbed in order to decipher them. The church is situated near the road and is surrounded by the grave stones which all face east. A low brick fence measuring about 122 yards by 55 yards encloses the cemetery, including the church. An old transcription of the cemetery was done in 1930 & checked in 1975. I used both of these transcriptions to help me read some of the older stones. An asterisk* in the list denotes that no marker was found in 1998, but it was present in 1930 or 1975 transcriptions. The Old Manahawkin Baptist Church built around 1758, was renamed "Heritage Park, Cultural Center" around 1980. The structure and cemetery are located at the corner of Rt. 9 North and Lake Shore Drive, in Manahawkin, NJ. The cemetery surrounds the old church and is very well kept by the members of the "Heritage Park, Cultural Center". Many early local families were buried here, Oliphant, Inman, Hazelton, Crane, Jennings are among the most numerous surnames. The cemetery has many graves from the 1800šs, including "The Unknown from the Sea" monument erected by the State of New Jersey honoring all the victims of the Powhattan Shipwreck. The ship is said to have left from Bremen Germany or Le Havre, France. It sunk after about 40 days at sea. So Išm guessing it departed somewhere around March 5-9 1854. Conflicting local histories make it hard to follow up on facts. Some say the Powhattan wrecked on April 16th and some say the 18th but all say it was April of 1854. The ship went down in a hurricane like snowstorm. The ship has been described as an immigrant packet ship, a 3 masted ship, a clipper ship etc., the ship supposedly had 300-325 German working class immigrants, along with 25 crew members aboard. Captain Myers was in charge. No immigrants were identified because of the local wreckmaster. The local wreckmaster has been named as either Squire Edward or Isaac Jennings. He supposedly stole all the money clips & buried them near the base of a cedar tree stump at the beach. He fled before charges could be brought against him. "The Mansion of Health" where he was employed as manager in what is now called "Surf City, NJ" was thought to be haunted by the ghost of a German immigrant woman carrying a child. Captain Stacy Hazelton assisted along with his crew in the fruitless effort to save the victims. The victims washed up on the shores of New Jersey, (Long Beach Island, Absecon Mainland, Brigantine, and Smithville). About 140 of the 300+ victims washed ashore in Pehala, Long Beach Island, NJ. They were laid out in Predmorešs barn, behind his store on Stafford Ave. They are buried in unmarked graves in Manahawkin at the Old Manahawkin Baptist Church, Smithville at the Old Quaker Cemetery, Brigantine Rum Point. In 1941 Avon Books published "Avon Ghost Reader" and in it contained the story of the Powhattan & the rumors of ghosts at the Mansion of Health. "The Old Mansion" was written by A. Sportsman, probably a pseudonym. An article printed in 1888 in the "Manasquan Seaside" about the wood taken from numerous shipwrecks to make a chest reports that the wood taken from the "Powhattan" was worm eaten and dark. A monument was erected for the Unknown at Manahawkin in 1904. The monument lies inside a low metal bar fence measuring about 25 yards by 25 yards. This is the location of the mass grave for the 140 bodies that washed ashore in Pehala, LBI.
