Akron, Fired By Storm, Crashes off Barnegat, Wreckage Found; Boats Search For Bodies of 73 The navy dirigible, Akron, queen of the airships of the world, caught fire at 12:30 a.m. today in a violent thunderstorm and fell into the sea 20 miles off Barnegat inlet with 76 men aboard, including Rear Admiral William Moffett. Four men were pulled out of the water, only 3 survived.
