Horatio Staples 8 Aug 1801 - 22 Jan 1824 bur. Danbury Cemetery, Stroudsburg, Pa. John Staples came to America in Dec 1773. (Supposedly he was serving on a ship that sunk off the coast of Maryland?) He went to Annapolis, Maryland in June 1775 and enlisted in the Continental Army. In June 1777, he was attached to the Maryland and Virginia Ar tillery, commanded by Col. Charles Harrison, for a term of three years or more, and was discharged at Philadelphia, Pa. in December 1780. He himself stated that he enlisted in the first regiment of Maryland at Annapolis. John Staples was in the battle of Long Island August 27, 1776, at Trenton December 26, 1776 when nine hundred Hessians were captured, and at Brandywine where he was severly wounded. After his discharge from the army, he resided in that part of Norhampton, now Monroe County, Pa. and died in Smithfield Township, now a part of Stroud Township, in said Monroe County, February 2, 1843 (Pa. Archives 3:xix listed him named Steeples in tax records) Mrs. John M. Staples, mother of the foregoing named children applied for a pension in May 1843. The statements above made are based upon information found in papers on file in the Pnsion Department, Washington, D.C." They are both buried in the Stroudsburg Cemetery.
