Archives [from Grants and Concessions, p.669] "Indian Deed for Elizabethtown Grant" "This Indenture made the 28th Day of October in the Sixteenth Year (1664) of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord Charles the Second, by the Grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith etc between MATTANO MANAMOWAONE, and COWESCOMEN, of Staten-Island, of the one Part, and JOHN BAILY, DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON of Jamaica, in Long-Island Husbandmen, on the other part. WITNESSETH, that the said MATTANO, MANAMOWAONE, and COWESCOMEN, hath clearly bargained & sold unto the said JOHN BAILY, DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON, their Associates, their Heirs and Executors, one Parcel of Land Bounded on the South by a River commonly called the Raritons River, and on the East by the River which Parts Staten-Island and the Main, and to run Northward up after Cull-Bay, till we come at the first River which sets Westwards up after Cull-Bay, aforesaid, and to run West into the Country twice the Length as it is broard from the North to the South of the aforemention'd Bounds; together with the Lands, Meadows, Woods, Waters, Fields, Fences, Fishing, Fowling, with all and singular the Appurtenances with all gains profits and Advantages arising upon the said Lands, and all other the Premises and Appurtenances to the said JOHN BAILY, DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON, with their Associates, with their and every of their Heirs, Executors, Administrators or Assigns, for ever, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said Lands with the Appurtenances to the said JOHN BAILY, DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON, with their Associates, their Executors, or Assigns. And the said MATTANO, MANAMOWAONE, covenant, promise, grant and agree to and with the said JOHN BAILY, DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON, and their Associates, their Heirs and Executors, to keep safe in the Enjoyments of the said Lands, from all expulsion and incumbrances whatsoever, may arise of the said Land, by any Person of Persons by reason of any Title had or growing before the Date of these Presents: For which bargain and sale, covenants, grants and agreements in the behalf of the said MATTANO, MANAMOWAONE, and COWESCOMEN, to be performed observed and done the aforesaid Parties are at their entry upon the said Land, to pay to the said MATTANO, MANAMOWAONE, and COWESCOMEN, Twenty Fathoms of Trading Cloth, two made Coats, two Guns, two Kettles, Ten Barrs of Lead, Twenty Handfuls of Powder. Archives [from Grants and Concessions, p.671] "Confirmation of the Purchase of the Elizabethtown Tract from the Indians" Governor NICOLLS' grant for land in New Jersey "To all to whom these Presents shall come, I RICHARD NICOLLS, Esq: Governor under his Royal Higness the Duke of York, of all his Territoies in America send greeting, "Whereas there is a parcel of Land within my Government which hath been purchased of MATTANO, MANAMOWAONE, and COWESCOMEN, of Staten Island, by JOHN BAILY; DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON, of Jamaica, in Long-Island, for a consideration expressed in a certain Deed of Indenture, bearing date the Twenty eighth day of October last, wherein the said Parcel of land was made over unto the said JOHN BAILY, DANIEL DENTON, and LUKE WATSON, and their Associates, their and every of their Heirs, Executors, Administrators or Assigns, for ever, as in the said Deed, relation being there unto had, more fully and at large doth and may appear: Now to the End the said lands may be sooner be planted, inhabitted and manured, I have thought fit to give, confirm and grant, and by these Presents do give, confirm and grant unto Captain JOHN BAKER, of New York, JOHN OGDEN, of North-Hampton, JOHN BAILY, and LUKE WATSON, of Jamaica on Long-Island, and their Associates, their Heirs, Executors, Administrators and Assigns, the said Parcel of Land Bounded on the South, by a River commonly called the Rariton River, on the East by the Sea which Parts Staten-Island and the Main, to run Northward up after Cull-Bay, till you come to the first River which sets Westward out of the said Bay, and to run West into the Country twice the length of the Breadth thereof from the north to the South of the aforementioned Bounds, together with all the lands, meadows, Pastures, Woods, Waters, Fields, Fences, Fishing, Fowling, with all and singular the Appurtenances, with all Gains, Profits, and Advantages, arising or that shall arise upon the said Lands and Premises. Archives [from N.Y. Col. MSS., in Secretary of State's office, Albany, Vol. XXXIII,, p.183] a) Testimony of TIMOTHY HALSTEAD, SAMUEL DENTON, both of Hemstead in Queens Co., and JOSIAH LENTIN, of Oisterbay Queens Co., relating to their Interest in the Elizabethtown Purchase b) HALSTEAD & SAMUEL DENTON testified 17 Nov 1685, before ELIAS DOUGHTY AND RICHARD CORNWELL, Justices in Quorum, that they participated as associates in the Purchase with DANIEL DENTON, JOHN BAYLIES, & LUKE WATSON. HALSTEAD testifies he and his brother received full satisfaction from DANl DENTON. SAMUEL DENTON testifies he also received full satisfaction from DANIELL DENTON. c) On 5 Dec 1685, TIMOTHY HOLSTEAD & SAMll DENTON gave further testimony which appears to say they were due further considration but had received none "but from Daniel Denton", and, that AMBROSE SUTTON was also an Associate in the Purchased) In Mar 1686, JOSIAH LETTIN testified before JOHN TOWNSEND Sr, Justice of the Peace, that he paid money to LUKE WATSON for participation as an associate but never received any satisfaction from WATSON nor any other of the purchasers. The West Jersey Society, by their agent THOMAS REVELL, to ELIAS BAYLEY of Queens Co., N.Y., planter, for 300 acres of Society's 30,000 acre tract above the Falls of Delaware." "The New Jersey Proprietors & Their Lands" by John E. Pomfret [Vol. 9, The New Jersey Historical Series] a) page 9: "On December 1, 1664, NICOLLS issued a patent for a particular plantation in the names of JOHN BAKER, JOHN OGDEN, JOHN BAYLY, and LUKE WATSON for lands on Achter Koll (Newark Bay). These men, with the exception of BAKER, the interpreter, had been looking at New Jersey lands while residing on Long Island. -----they purchased from Indains a large tract of land lying between the Raritan and the Passaic Rivers. The Elizabethtown patent, as it was called, extended from the mouth of the Raritan to the mouth of the Passaic, a distance of 17 miles, and distance of 34 miles into the back country. This tract, which included the whole of the present Union Co. and parts of Morris and Somerset as well, contained about 500,000 acres." b) page 10: "In 1666 PHILIP CARTERET bought out BAYLY, and OGDEN bought out DENTON." Archives [from "Journal of Governor and Council, vol. 1, 1682-1714"] a) "Whereas it's publickly known that Coll RICHARD NICHOLLS, Did by pattent give and grant unto JOHN BAKER JOHN OGDEN, LUKE WATSON AND JOHN BAYLY and their Associates a certaine Tract of Land ---" b) Dated 30 Aug 1683, "Elia Towne" c) a lenghty plea by ISAAC WHITEHEAD, noting that BAKER, et al, have been prevented by force from exercising their patent relating to the Elizabethtown deed. Archives [from "Administration of Governor LEWIS MORRIS, 1738-1747"] [FROM Elizabethtown Bill in Chancery, p.121] a) "Order in Council, referring to the consideration of the Lords of Trade, a memorial from Inhabitants of Elizabethtown to the King, asking for a hearing and determination of their controversies with the Proprietors of East Jersey." b) "At the Council Chamber Whitehall the 21th of Aug, 1744." c) This a lengthy plea by the inhabitants of Elizabethtown to the King to settle the question of ownership of the property originally purchased from Indians by JOHN BAYLIES, et al, that describes all the problems that ensued from the several changes from Dutch to British control of the area. d) "That immediately after the Purchase and Confirmation aforesaid (dated 1 Dec 1664) JOHN BAKER, JOHN OGDEN, JOHN BAYLIS, and LUKE WATSON, and their Associates, your humble Petitioners Ancestors, entered upon, planted, improved, and began to manure that Part of the said Land now called Elizabeth-Town." e) "--Gov. CARTERET, by Indenture, bearing Date the 8th Day of Sept., in the 17th Year of the Reign of His majesty King Charles the 2nd, under the Hand and Seal of the said JOHN BAYLIES, purchased of him the said BAYLIES, his Right, acquired by Virtue of Purchase and Confirmation aforesaid." f) Notes that 309 names are on petition which can be found in papers of F.J.
