This caused primarily by the agets and faded conditions of some of the documents from which these copies were made. COMPLETE FILE ENCLOSED BEST AVAILABLE COPY (PAGE 2) A copy of the NARA files showing the Soldiers Certificate. The Certificate bears the number 876,597, and shows that Alyea was a private in Co. C, 7th California Volunteers of Infantry. (PAGE 3) This page shows where and when Alyea went to be reviewed for this disability pension. In the first part under Pension Claim Number 1146619 Alyea provides the following information: (1) that he served with Co. C, 1st Reg't Cal Inf with the rank of private. (2) That the postoffice of the Examining Board is Prescott, Arizona Territory. (3) That Alyea's postoffice address is Lynx Creek, Yavapai Co, Arizona Territory and the date of examination is May (?) 3, 1893. (4) that Alyea is suffering from Disability-Senile. Alyea makes the following statement: "That he is a placer miner that who cannot earn a support by manual labor". The examining doctors report: He finds that Alyea's Pulse rate is 74., respiration , 22, Temperature , 100, Height , 5 ft. 9 in., Weight, 145 pounds, Age, 63 years. I find that the claimant is an inmate of the County Poor House. I find him unable to earn support by manual labor on account of physical inability. He is a worn out individual with no near relatives, and no vicious habits. I rate his disability as twelve eighteenths 12/18 I consider his disability as a government character I discover no other (not readable) disability. In conclusion the examining doctor Alyea is entitled to a 12/18 disability rating due to Senile Debility. [The doctors first name I can't make out, but his last name is Day] (PAGE 4) This shows the steps along the way to final approval of the pension. In the first part it shows that Joseph Alyea whose post office box is in Howell, Yavapai Co, Arizona, a veteran of Co. C, 7th Cal. Vols. Infantry would receive $ 8.00 per month commencing on February 27, 1893. This is based on Senile Debility. Part 2 shows an attorney, J. H. Shepherd, Oakland, California received a fee of $10.00. [the original petition was by Shepherd & Orton] Part 3 shows the Approvals of the pension rate along the line. One is dated October 8, 1894 and the other is dated October 13, 1894. Part 4 shows his service record: Enlisted: August 18, 1861 and Honorably Discharged on August 25, 1864; reenlisted on October 22, 1864 and Honorably Discharged April 26, 1866, this Declaration filed February 27, 1893, alleges permanent disability, not due to vicious habits, from Senile Debility. [There is a footnote: does not write]. (PAGE 5) This is a copy of the original claim filed by Shepherd & Orton on behalf of Alyea. The address of Shepherd & Orton at that time is 119 Bush St., San Francisco. The filing date is February 27, 1893 (PAGE 6) This is a copy of the certificate showing that Alyea has been dropped from the rolls due to Death. The certificate date is August 17, 1901 (PAGE 7) This is from the Bureau of Pensions asking Alyea for information prior to a quarterly payment. This certificate is dated January 15, 1898. In it they ask if he was married. Alyea replied No. They also asked if he was previously married. Alyea replied: No. They asked if he had any children. He replied: No. This form was dated June 6th, 1898. [Alyea appears to have signed the document ] (PAGE 8) This is the Declaration of Invalid Pension where Alyea and witnesses were in San Francisco at the offices of Shepherd and Orton and filled out the form and had it notarized. (PAGE 9) This form is one of the usual where they check his service record in general and also his medical records to see if there is anything to affect his pension status. It does show his service time with Co. C, 1st California and Co. C, 7th California. He showed no absences with the 1st California. The records showed a Detached Service in the 7th California from Feb. 17-28, 1866 . The medical record stated: " Joseph Alyea was treated for gonorrhea from October 9-15, 1865 and then returned to duty. Nothing additional found." (PAGE 10) A copy of the Pensioner Dropped certificate. This certificate is dated Aug 17 1901 and it refers to Joseph Alcea: Sirs: I have the honor to report that the above-named pensioner who was last paid at $ 8.00 a month to March 4, 1900 has been dropped due to Death. Date Unknown. (PAGE 11) More official documents certifying that Alyea served with both Co. C, 1st California and Co. C, 7th California. These are dated April 4 and 7, 1893.
