Price, of Burlington, gent:, fellow bondsman. ------- 1 The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts granted leave to the Rev. John Holbrooke, missionary at Salem, N. J., to remove to Burlington, at his request, as appears by the Society's letter to him of March 15, 1725-6. At the same time they sent the Rev. Nathaniel Horwood to take the Salem charge. But when he arrived at Salem, in January, 1727, he found that Mr. Holbrooke had concluded to remain there. Mr. Horwood therefore decided to to to Burling- ton, which he did. He seems to have met with some success at first, but toward the end of his allotted term of three years, there was a desire expressed (Dec. 3, 1729) by the churchwardens for a change, they alleging that he had "reduced once a brave flourishing congregation, into almost nothing at all." Mr. Horwood himself wrote home to the Society, requesting to be relieved.
