Note.--The books cited as Libers 1, 2, 3, etc., are of West Jersey Wills. Those cited as Libers A, B, etc., are of East Jersey Wills. Where there is no reference, the wills or other papers, of which abstracts are given, are among the unrecorded wills of the county to which they pertain. Thus, on this page, the will of George Abott (or Abbott) is recorded in Liber No. 3 of West Jersey Wills, page 61. The inventory of his personal estate is not recorded, but is filed in the box or boxes containing Salem Wills and other papers pertaining to the administration of estates for that county. Besides the regular series of West Jersey Wills, there are three of Salem Wills, and many are to be found in the Burlington Records. In some cases where the county is not designated in the papers, the reference has been added, as "Middlesex Wills," meaning that the papers are not recorded, but may be found in the box or boxes containing Middlesex Wills, etc. 246 New Jersey Colonial Documents. personal estate of (£109.4.6); made by Richard Downes and Nathaniel Jenkins. 1714-5 Feb. 13. Iness, Inness, Ennis, Alexander,3 of Monmouth ------- 1 Longfield or Langevelt 2 Longfield 3 The Rev. Alexander Innes was commissioned Chaplain of the Church of Eng- land in the Fort in New York, April 29, 1686. He brought over an order from Lord Middleton to Gov. Thomas Dungan that he should have the occupancy of two houses, but they were in such poor condition that he would not live in them. He is referred to as "Doctor" in a paper of Feb. 9-19, 1688, wherein it is stated that he insisted upon a certain interpretation of the words "Wild Indians," used in a treaty with the French. In the troubles in 1689, pending the Revolution, Dr. Innes was declared to be "by outward pretence a Protestant but in effect a meere papist, whose deceitfully has provided him with a certificate of the Ministers of the Dutch and France Church as if he was a true Protestant." He left New York about August, 1689, probably to escape the persecutions of Jacob Leisler, who in a letter to King William and Queen Mary, dated August 20, 1689, insisted that he had "testimony to good forme" that Dr. Innes was "known to be of opinion con- tray to" the Protestant religion. Innes and others sent to England a formal sub- mission to the new Sovereigns, and followed it in person. It does not appear when he returned to America; but in October, 1702, George Keith enters in his journal that "Mr. Innes being in Priests orders often preached among them [the people of Shewsbury, Freehold, and vicinity] and by preaching and conferences frequently with the Quakers and other sorts of people, as also by his pious con- 254 New Jersey Colonial Documents. The story of Mr. Innes' ministrations at Shrewsbury and thereabouts is thus summarized by the authorities of the church: "Col. Morris did undoubtedly in the year 1703, very earnestly solicit Dr. Beveridge (late Bishop of St. Asaph), a member of this Soci- ety [for the Propogation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts], to recommend it to the Society, to send a Missionary to Monmouth county, New Jersey, where a consid- erable body of people ahd formed themselves into a gathered Church and had promised all the help their narrow circumstances could afford their Minister. The Society were not then able to support a Missionary there. But the Reverend Mr. Alexander Innis happening to be in those parts, took the care of that people upon him. After a worthy discharge of his Function for some time, he died; up- on which the Justices of the Peace, the High Sheriff, and the Grand Jury of Mon- mouth county, did represent to the Society, in the year 1717, that the worthy Rev- erend Alexander Innis, by unwearied pains and industry, gathered three congre- gations in this county, tho' much scattered in their habitaitons; yet did he visit them, teaching them, instructing them all, once at least in three weeks."--N.
