Johnson Biography WILLIAM F. JOHNSON was born May 17, 1818, in Sussex county, N. J. and is a son of Joseph Johnson, who moved to Tompkins county. William’s father hired him out to the neighboring farmers from the time he was eleven years old until the age of twenty when he bought his time of his father, giving his note for $150, which his father traded for a house and lot, and which he afterwards paid. January, 1838 he married Miss M. Hill, daughter of William Hill, of Tompkins county New York. He rented a farm and followed farming until 1840, when he came to Shenango and settled on one hundred acres, which he purchased of Mr. Huidekoper. There was a house on the tract and three acres improved. In 1847 he sold, and bought 150 acres of John Eastlake and afterwards 850 acres more. In 1849 he commenced dealing in stock, and gradually increased the business, and in 1804 he drove ten droves in company with James Martin and Samuel Livingston, and one alone, on which his share of the profits was $6,000. In the fall of 1857 he took the contract for cutting and hauling the pine timber off from fifty acres of land for an Akron company, and the same season had charge of a gang of bark pealers about three months, for the same company. He has never held any office except School Director, always profesing to be a business man rather than an office seeker. Directory of Crawford County, PA, 1879-1880, page 312 Submitted by Teri Brown
