The family came to Chester county, Pennsylvania and remained one year in the fall of 1818, with a yoke of oxen and a span of horses, they started across the country to Crawford county. After a month’s journey they landed where Linesville now stands, then a wilderness. Taking 400 acres, on which was an old mill built by a land agent named Colt, they began to clear away the forest; the mill was rebuilt and it gradually became the center of all that section of country, so that, in 1830, a town was laid out and given the name of Linesville. Here Amos Line lived to see a flourishing village grow. He died August 20th, 1853. Joseph lived with his father until 1837, when, August 16th, he married Mary Van Winkle, daughter of Thomas Van Winkle, of Old Conneaut now Union township. After marriage he took one hundred acres of the original farm and worked at farming, clearing and tending the grist mill, and afterward teaching. In all he has taught twenty-four terms. Though now quite too old for active life, he has been always prominent in the affairs of his town, having fulfilled at various times the duties of Auditor, School Director, Town Clerk and other offices of importance and trust Directory of Crawford County, PA, 1879-1880, page 303 Submitted by Teri Brown
