Find Graves of Original Settlers. The lost graves of two sons of an original settler of New Providence have been found in Deserted Village, Watchung Reservation. The graves of John and william Willcocks, son of Peter willcocks, were found with that of a third man, Joseph Badgley. All three had fought in the American Revolution. John apparently was killed in George Washington's retreat across New Jersey in 1776. The graves have been marked with head stones by the Union County Park Commission and a 13-star flag is being flown at the site. John Willcocks was a member of "Captain Marsh's Troop, Light Horse." He died Nov. 22, 1776. His brother William was judge advocate for Revolutionary courts-martial held in Chatham during the war. He lived near the site on part of the original Willcocks homestead and died Oct. 20, 1800. Badgley, as cousin of the Willcockses, died in 1785.
