Ida Carkhuff died May 31, 1907.]Mrs Carkhuff Laid at Rest A Resident of Garwood, NJ, But Was Well Known in Bayonne Sympathy is extended to Mr Philip A Carkhuff of Garwood, NJ, whose companion was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery, Elizabeth, NJ, June 3. Nowhere was the personality and labor of Mrs Carkhuff more highly appreciated than in the church and community where she had lived. She was a former resident of Elizabeth and came of the noted family of the Halsteads. She was a cousin of the late Fred Appelles of Elizabeth, who was known far and near as a master musician and organist of St John's Church in that city for many years. Mrs Carkhuff was a woman of superior intelligence, a member of the Presbyterian Church of Garwood, and magnified her office as mother in the home life, as at the close of each day, as she sat in her chair, often in pain of body, she would direct her two boys aged nine and 13 respectively in the evening devotion, they in turn reading to her the scripture. It has been said that it is "easier to Do than to Bear the will of God" but when this [ ] was laid aside and days and nights of suffering were her portion, she honored the master by the fortitude she manifested. Not only was the pain borne uncomplainingly, but at times her face and manner showed the sunshine within. Surely the world is poorer and heaven richer by her removal. The husband (who was untiring in his devotion) and the family have sustained an unspeakable loss, but there is great comfort in the thought that she "being dead, yet speakesth and that her [ ] do follow her."
